dunno, at least i can use the element ammo which i used to ignore in previous games and faster wyrenheart spam, and now normal ammo shots 3 times like LGB.

So for me it's still solid.

I would hazard a guess at a few things.

Since you are a vet, you are likely relatively optimized in gear.

You played World, and played during the era of the zinogre shotgun, king of all dps.

You are also not playing the gun the way Wilds wants you to.

Compared to world, HBG is not as bursty. Now, you are expected to use the element weakness of the monsters you are fighting, hard specialize into the ammo type you want to use (normal, pierce, spread ect) and use your special ammo off cooldown. Since the guns have autoguard when you arent in an action, and a manual guard for perfect guarding, the game wants you to be siting in your perfect range, and doing high pressure consistent damage over big burst moments, and CCing the monster through your focus shots on wounds. They are far more mid range now as compared to other games.

Elemental ammo pierces now, and is considerably stronger than it used to be.

I havent found the guns to feel all that weak, tbh. The changes to normal ammo (burst fire), the guaranteed shield, better hops, perfect guard, reduced ammo types (as well as having a second weapon to swap to different ammos) have made it far less clunky than it used to be, and more consistent. The game wants you to be more aggressive with them.

Imo more like "Adjusted". It is actually stronger in term of damage. But weaker in its utility. It is sorta like previously you have a swiss pocket knife with many tools, but now you are given a kitchen knife and screwdiver separately.

I noticed currently it is difficult to find any (H)BG with 2 or more debuff ammo set. As mitigation, you can now bring 2 weapons and seems (H)BG currently is more damage oriented too especially on it's elemental ammo and since bow now has "unlimited" coatings; It is easier to just create an Artian bow with 2 other debuff coatings and have an element damage-focused (H)BG rather than the reverse.

One to avoid however is spread ammo. The recoil is just so meh.

i actually use the spread ammo to make a distance from the recoil or get lucky to flinch it when monster come gnawing to me. It's kinda badass if you time it right.

Well, that is one thing I thought too at first. Like if you "dodge recoil" at right time, you might get an offset attack chance or your gauge regenerates faster than when hitting with other bullets. But sadly no luck, instead DPS performance "feels" kinda meh compared to strafe-shooting normal/pierce/elemental ammo from safe range while mounted and when I am not a so pro player who can 100% dodge with the recoil.

it aint weak, its speed running times are better than several weapons. its different and harder to utilise. its no longer the no skill weapon it has been for the last 2-3 games.

no longer may have been an exaggeration... you need to be awake to play it now.

Which ammo type do you use?

Wilds is all about piercing and elemental, anything else will feel weak.
To get the most out of the HBG. You definitely need to make sure you're always aiming for a non-Resistant limb and make sure you're spending most your time sitting within range and not needing to pack up and move constantly.

Definitely wont be as quick to dish out DPS as some of the melee weapons. But you can also keep on hitting the Head even when its out of Melee range. (Being able to use Focus strike to knock Fleeing monsters out of the air is also great)

from experience. normal Ammo on the LBG is really good. Given you stay in range. Using its Rapid fire and being able to dodge while continuing to fire lets you keep pelting monsters in weak points.

yeh, i only use the spread ammo for emergency or getting too close with monster. Until i get some evade extender deco :V. Got bored of guard up and offensive guard play style.

for me, i use focus skill, & ignition recovery mod. Spam wyrenheart to my heart content.
I have zero respect towards those who use ranged weapon in a franchise where melee weapons are amazing. Zero. None.

It doesn't feel weak. And that's all that matters.

It's always funny to me when people compare DPS of weapons in a game that isn't PVP. They aren't so different that one has 10 min clear time and one has a 3 min clear time XD.

Ranged weapons have advantage of being safe and consistent, there's no downtime.

Hammer is about stuns.

Lance is like your tank class.

They will have less DPS.
