That website is the second worst source I can imagine.
Seems to me like a weird cliché that especially PC players take up a ranged weapon because it is like playing an FPS. Kinda Shepard-like when Legion had him helped in the digital world.
I'm questioning how accurate your data is. Although 200 is a pretty small sample size as well, so...
Also played with Controller.
In wilds I started with M/KB. I wanted to master bow or any other range weapon and once you figured how the controls work for keyboard, because the system is really really bad with all the submenus, it’s a lot easier to play ranged for me.
On the flip side, the only HBG I have ever seen is the AI dude from the default helpers. I have yet to see players use it or maybe they are hiding in the bushes a little too well.
Overall, it seems Wilds is more diverse in player classes usage than World, I see a lot more variety. But still, some classes are just more popular than others. And it's not the ranged ones.
