Questions from a MH baby
Hello there,

only experience with MH was Worlds for like 20 hours, but couldn't really stick with it. With Wilds, I feel like the gameplay feel has improved immensely, but I keep wondering things:

Using SNS, I mostly use they Y combo into spinning slash into charged attack, since that seems to do the most damage aside from exploiting wounds. Counterattacks after blocking with the shield every so often. Is there anything I'm missing? It's starting to get stale lol

Haven't played much, but so far every monster seems to take about 4-6 minutes, which in and of itself isn't really that long. But the fights haven't been interesting so far. Attack patterns are fairly simple, so I don't really get hit much. I go after wounds whenever I notice one and try to focus on the monsters' weak points, so I'm not sure if there's anything else I should be doing.

So my problem is that the fights aren't really challenging, but take what feels like an inordinate amount of time for the challenge presented. I'm certain that the fights get harder the further you get, but I'm starting to worry if I'll ever get there. You guys got any pointers, or could it be that this series just isn't for me?

Cheers!

With the implementation of the wound system, and targeting, the game has the most ease of access to date. All MHs are easy, besides the ultimate editions. This game just adds more to make grinding less tedious. Which, imo, isnt a bad thing.
Fights in these games are made to be punching bags so there is little effort to learn anything so youre right. They are not challenging and they never were meant to be.

Regarding SnS: you've got the basics. But weaving in the B combo instead of just going to Spinning Reaper+Charged Chop will net you more damage if the opening presents itself. I never SR+CC off of the Y Combo personally. Also find openings for Perfect Rush if you're using Raw/Status as it's actively worse for Elemental iirc.

Depends on where you're at for unique fights. 4-6 minutes is a bit on the fast side. Average is 8-10 minutes solo with approaching 15+ for slow fights. They'll get harder and more interesting as we get later in the game + title updates add different monsters. The expansion is where difficulty will ramp up, as is tradition w/ MonHun games.

The best way to add variety to the combat is to add more weapons. Fighting a Chatacabra feels different with Lance than SnS and both feel different from Switch Axe or Charge Blade.

Thanks man, I'll give those tips a try. Any recommendations for a second weapon in terms of accessibility?

New players don't call themselves babies.

Reads like satire.

You're not wrong though, Veteran-in-disguise.

If it's unbelievable for you that people are trying to be modest, just remember not everyone has a massively inflated ego like some other people do.

When I was new to Monster Hunter because I only logged a few hours in World, I called myself a newbie and an idiot.

Because I was new, and doing stupid rookie things.

But a lot of the new players are all praising the game and/or playing it.

Not seeing very many of them writing up some really nicely explained detailed answers why the game is so easy in a very clandestine way lol.

This reads like a satirical response to other threads where people keep calling people MH Babies/World babies.

Maybe though.

it's just weird that they are lowkey hating on MH combos too lol

"I'm an MH BABY but this is a baby tier game"

"I'm an MH BABY, please help me understand why this game is so easy" lol

kinda doesn't make any sense.

Fair, but I don't think that was their intention.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you're wanting more of the SnS "never stop attacking" gameplay then Lance and DB are really good. Lance feels a bit more like SnS with the perfect guarding and counters and DB with the evasion and rapid attacks. For something a bit more heavy hitting, I really love SA and Hammer. Hunting Horn is a bit complicated with the different songs but is also really fun to play once you get a feel for it. I'd also recommend Gunlance and IG. For ranged, I prefer HBG, but they're all really good.

If you mean for the second weapon slot. I tend to just bring two of the same weapon type, one element/blast one paralysis. So my Fire Sets have a Fire SnS + Para SnS, Open with the paralysis weapon and then swap to the element once it leaves. If I want to hunt with an SnS, I don't want to swap to Greatsword mid-hunt, I want to hunt with SnS.

That's hilarious, I never considered that it may come across that way lol

But no, I was being genuine. Like I said in the OP, I only played World for like 20 hours and quit and am now trying to get back into it with Wilds. I haven't really engaged with the MH community yet and used the term MH baby to say that I'm still fairly new to the series.

I started learning SnS last night, your B combo (without a left stick movement as that initiates shield bashes) are stronger but afford less movement.
You also have the perfect rush combo or the aerial moves that come from a backwards B input after attacks and rolls.
All of your combos can end with Y+B into charged Y+B for additional damage.
you also have RT+Y for fast repositioning
you can also spam RT+B whilst a monster is attacking to essentially get free perfect guards which help towards initiating power clashes.
Farsha Mar 18 @ 6:01am
1. B combo is stationary bud does more raw dmg and it is faster way to reach spinning reaper and charged chop.
2. Id say practice back hop into pefect rush. It´s long but if done fully and correctly with the Y+B air finisher it is the highest dmg combo.
Also it is also fun to use. Spamming B combo gets old fast.
3. Use the sliding chop for repositioning, you can even cancel it into focus strike

Real advantage of SnS is that it can combine all mives at will. So real endgame is player expression with this weapon.

SNS has a variety of features you can utilize.

Damage is great and all, but have you considered...

Shield bashing for KOs?
Switching up between using downward slash and shield bash (slash is better for mounting)
Watching for focus points to open early (SNS has a hidden mechanic where if you hit a white wound with your focus strike it will automatically open for you without you needing to hit it more.) This also outright ups your damage, especially if you're using element, as the attack hits multiple times.
Support build for online play, as SNS does not require sheathing to use items

Just to name a few things right off the bat SNS can do other weapons can't.

Well SnS is deceptively simple, but it has quite a few tricks.

Best is really to find a decent guide in YouTube, it's kind of hard to explain in a thread like this, given it has quite a bit of tricks that are not immediately apparent.
