Beginner keep dying, what's wrong
I'm new to mh series and use gunlance as weapon. I keep dying at the hen- looking monster.
Is my combo too long? I should not use gunlance to learn? I need better setting on target lock and camera? Any advice?

Don't feel like you have to keep attacking. Play defensive, block, watch the monster's moves and look for openings. You'll get the hang of it, eventually.
Play defensively, focus on blocking all the monsters attacks, and observe openings.

you have a shield. use it. Also what kind of gunlance are you using? Different shelling types have different play styles (except long because who even uses long anyway)
Also, please dont think that a weapon isnt good to learn MH with. All weapons are viable to start with, if your having fun on GL, keep at it. MH is about learning the monsters moves and telegraphs for their attacks. If you have played a DS game, its similar. Keep practicing your weapon and learn its strengths and weaknesses. There are great videos on YT that can help like Arekkz Gaming that can help break down a lot of the mechanics of the weapons.

If all else fails, find someone you can hunt with that can help you. HM is also a game about hunting with friends/community. Dont be afraid to send up an SOS or ask for help as well. Its better to learn earlier than later. Im happy to help if you need it, as Im sure a lot of people are.
Switch to sword and shield and prioritize evade window + evade extension skills until you get used to things. Dodge is going to be a more forgiving strategy to avoid damage than block.

It's not always your turn to attack, you need to learn when it's safe to attack and when you need to block/dodge. Don't forget to eat a meal to increase your max health and stamina, and if you get below like 70%, call your seikret and start healing while moving.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. If a strategy isn't working, try something else. Either way, there's no golden weapon choice that is going to make the game easier. They all have different playstyles, drawbacks, and pros.

You shouldn't feel locked into a certain weapon type. I played Sword and Shield and Hunting Horn before settling on Switch Axe as my primary weapon of choice. It's rewarding to master a weapon class so don't stress out over it.

As others have said, don't expect to constantly be attacking. If you attack during the monster's "turn" you're going to get hit and monsters like to take multiple turns in a row.

Start with looking for when you can attack once. Then try to attack twice. Then start looking for when you can block their attacks. Then look for the big openings for you longer and stronger combos. You can't cancel your attacks, once you attack you're animation locked so try to only attack when you actually have an opening.

the monsters in mh are aggressive bunch, nothing to do with any weapon. they will be trying to combo you more than you can combo them, half of your life will be spamming space.

use short combos, attack wounds, when its on ground, execute big hitting longer combos.

If you think the base game is hard.... may not be for you. This is the easiest MH game of all time by a long shot. Even Rise was harder than this game. It's honestly a shame just how causal MH has become to cater to the newer player-base.

You have block, just play it like a fighting game. If you're not sure block, then you'll start to see when it's safe and then attack

The best advice i can give is honestly just try out different weapons and see what feels best to you, the play styles vary a lot depending on what weapon you use. Some weapons take much more pacing and strategy others require you to learn the monsters to a finer detail, and a few offer you a wider range of freedom to move, like the standard bow

Basically while learning the game just try out everything and go with what you like most, are you aggressive, defensive, a planner? and go from there.

Eh, not really, some weapons are easier or harder to use than others. I wouldn't suggest people start with any weapon that can't block, for instance, except DB. I don't think HBG or CB are good beginner weapons, either.

Gunlance is mostly fine for newcomers, though it's combos can get a little long-winded.

It's really impossible to tell without a video or more details about your strategy. If you want me to throw advice blind, I'll assume you know how to block (unlike everyone else in this thread) and say It's likely that you're just not managing your stamina very well. Shields aren't Get-Out-Of-Carts-Free cards, you will still die if you don't watch yourself.

Make sure you've eaten before you start hunting. During the hunt, don't just stand there with your shield up, you will eventually run out of stamina. Don't be afraid, you hold the mightiest weapon of all. Try to only block when the monster does an attack.

Also, don't rely entirely on your shield. There's going to be some attacks you really just want to dodge, and you have to make sure you can find an opening to disengage when you need to heal. If you find yourself in the middle of an enraged monster's thrashing limbs with your shield up, out of stamina, and no escape plan, you're going to die. Learn your hops.

I would suggest you to try Evade Extender 3 and Gobbler 2. Makes the game a smoother experience.

first, learn your weapon combos. There are many first timer who don't know what their weapon capable of. So spend more time on training ground and read the play guide of each weapon. Second, learn the monster movement especially on high rank.
