It is just a matter of convenience. Not using focus mode makes you maneuver easier. Focus mode highlights wounds more.
I use toggle focus mode in melee and hold in range and use it as I see fit.
Definitely convenient, but not always good in every situation.
Obviously comes with the added benefit of highlighting wounds, making it easier to target them and using focus strikes.
So if you prefer to keep focus mode on, there is no downside. Doesn´t change your attacks or their damage.
For me it depends on the weapon. On Hunting Horn I only use it for the occasional focus strike but for lance I use it quite frequently to have more precise pokes and more mobility with the low poke movement it offers.
On Greatsword its nice to adjust swings when the monster is moving.
Ultimately it comes down to personal preferance. Either way, in my opinion its a great addition to the game.
Personally I disagree with that being a great addition. That is, because it highlights the wounds - that is what bothers me.
You can trigger the wounds normally and play the game entirely without focus mode. It makes the camera more stable when you want to play more precise, but as it is I consider it personally as quite distracting - teaching a weird behaviour regarding wounds with the implied conditioning.
do you just keep hitting the same spot and it becomes wounded i guess?
A wound opens if you repeatedly attack the same spot - there are certain spots on the monster where that can happen - it is always the same specific spots.
You can tell that a wound is fully opened when you the red/blue blood from it.
Then you attack it normally with (controller) RB , the special attack for wounds, and your character will do it no matter if you are in focus mode or not.
So yeah, you can entirely enjoy the game without focus mode.
It is just a matter of convenience if you want it highlighted or not, but the veteran hunter can tell when a wound appears and is ready to "harvest".
Outside of those rare niche instances I tend to ignore focus mode and just leave them for bonus damage when I land hits on them....I however have a friend that exists in focus mode and will dash from the tail to the head to pop them and its annoying....
The only benefit is if you want to superman dive, move a bit faster to get to the monster, or like if your CB is overheated and you want to do the mash combo AED shortcut to charge shield. Maybe weapons that move more like Hammer dont Focus Mode, but they got the short end in Wilds.
Its very, very rare and its not as "ohmuhgud its deep" like this guy is saying so...
Truer words have never been spoken.
If there was an actual benefit to using Focus over Normal, I wouldn't know.
Wound popping, Side roll (without focus mode, you will do roll to the side instead. This keep your character facing monster ready to attack)
Some weapon like LA and GL when hold focus mode your back step range increase.
Weapon like CB can do slide slash from hold focus. Previous tittle you'll need hop or slash as a buffer.
Etc... figure it out yourself.
That is true. Though I do not really see it as actual benefit. But it surely makes it easier to do those moves if you focus, while when not being in focus you can do it easy by default.
