Going for fishing achievement and nothing is catching
When I get the fish to bite, I can get them, every time. The whoppers either hardly spawn or don't nibble at all. Between those two very important factors and the seikret, palico and camera angles being absolutely horrendous by getting in the way or not providing the angles I need, the fishing needs an entire rework. My proposal for a fix: switch the reeling to the right analog stick. The entire process is too finnicky, even when I catch them after they bite. The Outdoorsman gem actually made my luck WORSE. I had better luck with it off. Such an absolute embarrassing achievement.

Hm. I had no problem with this achievement. Rest till plenty morning in the forest and go to the area 12 and 17. There's around 5 whoppers per rest.
The fishing is kinda easy when you know what to do. Just move the stick with the directional of fish and look where it's jumping. That's it. The only propblem I had is obstacles. Even after 30 whoppers still don't know what to do with them, but i saw it only 3 times.

It's now 10pm. I started doing this periodically since 3 or 4 today. I believe I only have 13 out of 30. I've never gotten 5 out of one node. I get like one or two, then the rest are smaller fish.

You need to use the right bait thingy for the right whopper first off. Gajau for example don't actually like the tough bait thing. They like the common woodskip or whatever. The giant squid likes the tentacle bait thing more. The other 3 whoppers are the only ones you should be using the tough bait thing for.

Secondly, you should move your bobber around occasional to generate interest with the fish. Try to occasionally do a slow reel once every 2-3 seconds. Like just slow reel for a milisecond. Slow reeling is when you press up down up down up down. But don't do it when the fish is nearly on top of the bobber. As you could scare it away instead.

Finally, if you're trying to get the whoppers to spawn, just rest in your tent, or warp in and out of the map instead to refresh the fish.

I saw a tip which gave me some better luck, which was to cast past the fish and repeatedly work the lure by flicking back on the left stick.
For reeling once you get a bite, this works differently than in most other fishing games: pull in the direction opposite to where the fish is going to tire it out. When you get it to take a break (your hunter will shift their stance), repeatedly flick down-up on the left stick to reel them in.

Otherwise it really comes down to manipulating the time+weather. I didn't need to repeatedly force respawns for the fishing quests (I did for the gathering quests).
