How does "you have new messages hold start" even work

keep getting this "you have x new messages", but when I hold start nothing seems to pop up after that point. Is is working correctly? I am confused

If you hold in the key, for me it's the start-button equivalent on the Xbox controller, for a long time. Any time you hold the key in for a long time it will open up the chat log. I thought it was broken too, and honestly maybe it is. Just have to hold it in for longer than you'd expect.

You have to hold it, without there being another prompt in the way, otherwise you'll accidentally open the other prompt. In some zone it's far more aggressive than one would think, compared to other zone. Windward Plains feels like it's the worst, but that's where I sit by default.... So, really I don't know.

it just opens the chat log, it doesnt actually tell you which of the messages are new. so far it hasnt had a shred of usefulness for me so i usually just ignore it

Check your other buttons. For me it is reverted. And I changed it to press for easier access too.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that it lists the "You have # new messages. Hold start" as one of the new messages. It gives the impression that you need to hold start a second time.
