Yeah I do have 3 Paralyzes withing a 4 Minute Hunt, so on Average 1 every Minute or so. Thats 10secs of more pummeling besides the Monster being stuned, downed or sleeped. So much more comfortable than killing it maybe 20secs faster.
And Para weapons while lacking in damage when compared to the other options, have very good sharpness. Running Lala SnS with Razor Sharp 2 + Paralyze Up 3, I can't even remember when was the last time I sharpened the damn thing.

there is no such things as "best element"
every monster has a strength and weakness.
look at the monster field guide for this information

Yeah, but I feel sleep loses DPS in the long run since only 1 source of damage is doubled when the monster is sleeping. A monster being paralyzed means all the team gets to hit the crap out of it for whoever many seconds the monster is afflicted. Also sleep is harder to control, since people might be mid combo, and you might waste the double damage you would get from sleep on someone not being able to stop a combo in time.
I treat sleep the same way I do paralysis: just keep hitting it. If everybody just keep ls wailing on it, then the amount of extra damage is comparable to wailing on a paralyzed monster. It's for that reason, and because statuses get diminishing returns, that I run a paralyze weapon while I make sure to give my palico a sleep weapon.

Water / Thunder is my default.
There are admittedly a lot weak to Fire too.
There are comparatively few weak to Ice and even less weak to Dragon.
I definitely do blast.

For Wilds specifically, the answer seems to be Ice. Only 3 monsters resist ice. Everything else is resisted by about 5.

Here's a chart for just "is effective" and ignores "is weak to"

A backup of any non-dragon weapon will give you 100% coverage

ITT: Lots of people not understanding the difference between Status and Element.

For elements:
Fire Immune: 7
Water Immune: 5
Thunder Immune: 3
Ice Immune: 3
Dragon Immune: 5 (effectively 6, as Kut-Ku only takes Dragon Damage on the neck)

All three thunder immune are weak to Ice. Two out of three ice immune are weak to thunder with the third resisting it but not immune to it.

I'd make a thunder and ice weapon. Use thunder for everything but Rey Dau, G.Fulgur Anja, and Gypceros, which you'll use Ice for.

Blast.

In the earlygame it is definitely fire/water as so many monsters have a weakness to these two. thunder doesnt have many monsters weak to it, Rathian, Uth Tuna and Chatacabra are the main monsters weak to the element that come to mind right off the bat. Ice isn't all that useful since only one monster comes to mind with a big weakness to it.

sleep for solo if you have a slower/harder hitting weapon, blast for faster weapon solo builds (blast is great on any weapon though, i think sleep is better for greatswords and such) and go paralyze for multiplayer builds, or just blast again if you think someone else will have paralysis already

yeah elements are different than status, but elements suck in this game so everyone talks about status, id recommend dragon against all monsters if you want an elemental weapon as the only enemies that are actually difficult in this game are weak to dragon with maybe one or two exceptions that arent a big deal

The only enemies I see people complain about for difficulty are Gore Magala and Arkveld. Gore is more weak to Fire than Dragon with Thunder being slightly worse than Dragon. Arkveld is equally weak to all elements except Dragon with Dragon being slightly better. Given there's 3 thunder immune and 6 (effectively) Dragon Immune. And as long as it's not immune its taking *some* damage, Thunder is the best element in Wilds currently*, with Ice roughly as good.

*Future title updates may change this as more monsters weak to and immune to the various elements are added.

Edit: regarding elements sucking in this game. People are undervaluing elemental hit zones. I used Rey Dau as an example in another thread and using a 160 Raw/120 Ice slashing weapon would require a 191 Raw slashing weapon to break even. The 160/120 is based off an actual weapon in my equipment box, I haven't seen anything above 180 Raw where I'm currently at in the story.
