Monster Hunter Wilds
Why does Alma(the new handler) wear modern glasses?
Am I the only one who noticed this?
It’s not just the glasses, even her clothes look like something a 21st-century New Yorker would wear. Could Monster Hunter be set in a post-apocalyptic world?

Other characters with glasses have all had antique frames, so Alma’s look is very strange and stands out.

Why this design choice? Is it a mistake, or is there really a change in the story direction?

I find it interesting that it's the glasses you find weird and not that some hunters are still using swords to fight giant monsters in melee range when they have access to heavy bowguns.
you'd think the hunters would be a lot more effective if they just sniped every monster from range
its an especially funny argument for the topic creator to make: its a fantasy setting, not a historic setting, it is, by its very nature, never "out of time" no matter how modern of an object we see, as it'd be cannon to monhun anyway.

it's not the first character with glasses, it wont be the last

It does have a fashion style and limits, of course. How could anyone say otherwise?

Monster Hunter has always emphasized fashion, but its style is deeply tied to the game's pre-industrial, medieval-fantasy setting.

While artistic freedom allows for creativity, the "rule of cool" must still align with the established world. Adding modern elements like modern glasses or hipster headband would break this coherence and feel completely out of place.

The armor sets are inspired by creatures and ancient cultures, staying consistent with the setting. This balance between creativity and consistency is key to maintaining immersion. It ensures the game's identity remains cohesive, allowing players to fully experience its world.

Of course, there are fun elements like cosplay, quirky costumes and weapons like the swordfish. But these shouldn’t and can’t be applied to a main character in the game. These playful designs are meant for lighthearted moments and not for characters who need to stay true to the world’s tone and immersion.

The series has changed mostly into a steampunk aesthetic for quite a while now. The whole pre-industrial thing is long gone.

Also, have you for a moment realized these glasses are very old models that came back into fashion recently and not something entirely new? It's just a larger version of the third fleet master in world, I can totally see it in line with the in game's technology.

Heck, check the chief researcher glasses from Generations, they're way more modern looking than Alma's.

And on top of all that, it's their world. They decide what's possible or out of place on their own piece of work.

It's funny you mentioned the chief researcher from Generations, because I was thinking of how the Gal outfits (Bherna* Gal specifically) are just as "modern" as Alma's jacket

Edit: misspelled Bherna

So, would you all be fine with a swordfish weapon for Alma? Interesting. Some players don’t care about the game at all. This will be the Fortnite of Monster Hunter games.
The issue for you seems to be the style of the frames being more "modern", not that she has eyeglasses. But they're just large round frames

This is a portrait of a Cardinal from 1600 wearing similar frames. It's not exactly "modern"

Her jacket also looks fine to me, it doesn't look out of place at all
Why should it be a problem to wear glasses? If you played monster hunter you would have seen many characters wearing glasses. Moreover the image you posted shows exactly glasses with an ancient frame.

If you can’t see the difference in the glasses or even in the jacket, you needs more modern glasses, just like Alma 😂.
She does look like she should have a starbucks cup in one hand and a macbook under the other arm.

Is that a coincidence in the current year? Iunno, maybe...

I suspect they had her designed using some AI software. They probably input "girl," "Monster Hunter style", "glasses" and "hipster" into the prompt.

Someone just forgot to do a consistency check 😂.

I actually do wear modern glasses. So, nice? But her frames are literally large round frames, that's all. There's nothing "modern" about them?

And again, how is the jacket an issue when we've had "handlers" wearing something that's basically a flight attendant uniform two generations ago.

https://monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Bherna
You can see concept art and in-game models at the bottom of the page. The Bherna Gal outfit is basically indistinguishable from a flight attendant cosplay.
I wouldn't say her glasses or outfit stick out. The glasses could just as easily pass for 19th century design. The coat is over-designed. Lots of pockets, leatherwork that might not fit the era/setting exactly. But it doesn't really stand out as being abnormal from normal MH outfits.

If anything stands out. It's the skin tight underwear your hunter can wear. It looks like scuba/diving wear. Now that's feels out of place. As scuba suits are made with synthetic rubber and it sorta looks like your underwear is also made out of synthetic rubber by proxy.
Alma is so pretty. Im really looking forward to see the story with her :>

Edit: but speaking of Gunlance, my issue lies not with the fact that it shoots bullets, because we've made cane's that do that, and it's basically just a large Musket w/ Bayonet in concept. It's the reload. You swing the weapon (or thump it on the ground) spent casing are ejected.... And then new shells are magically loaded into the Lance?

CAPCOM EXPLAIN!

Gunlances actually contain a tank holding a Burst Arowana with about 15 levels of Recovery Speed. When reloading, you rip off some scales and load them into your magazine.
I don't think they are that out of the place. If they were half rims or something it would be more out of place, but early spectacles did have the big circular frames. The development of glasses was getting them smaller and reducing the thickness of the frame.
OP, you don’t question Dragon fashion.

No, you're just the only one doesn't know that past characters wore modern glasses, too, like the Guildmarm.
