Why does Alma(the new handler) wear modern glasses?
Am I the only one who noticed this?
It’s not just the glasses, even her clothes look like something a 21st-century New Yorker would wear. Could Monster Hunter be set in a post-apocalyptic world?

Other characters with glasses have all had antique frames, so Alma’s look is very strange and stands out.

Why this design choice? Is it a mistake, or is there really a change in the story direction?

🤷

Because Monster Hunter always had this "there was an Ancient Civilization with advanced tech" background.

Alma isnt even the first character with eye glasses.

We've had glasses like that in this series for well over a decade, some of the most beloved characters in the series wear glasses. There is no reason for them not to exist as they do as these games are fantasy games and ultimately the technological advancement of the people in the world is sporadic. If there's airships why not glasses? Alma's clothes aren't even the most modern i've ever seen. You should see what characters wear in generations (and yes, generations is canon and considered a core title by Capcom; case in point Glavenus in World, Valstrax in Rise, official statements by the producers etc etc)

I gotta say it's funny people can suspend disbelief at a ship sailing through the sand but draw the line at a woman wearing glasses. I mean there's a Lance that's just a big plunger with a toilet lid for the shield. Don't take it so seriously because it has never taken itself that seriously.

The issue for OP seems to be the style of the frames being more "modern", not that she has eyeglasses. But they're just large round frames

This is a portrait of a Cardinal from 1600 wearing similar frames. It's not exactly "modern"

Her jacket also looks fine to me, it doesn't look out of place at all

You're talking about Plunger Lance's when you should actually be talking about:
Gun Lance
Charge Blade
And Switch Axe.

I mean, seriously? A lance that shoots bullets? Or a sword and shield that turns into an axe? Or an axe that turns into a sword?

And OP stops at glasses and clothing...

not sure why it's a big deal but its not exactly new
pretty sure op would tie this to gender politics somehow

Welcome to 2025, where gamers will complain about stuff that were always present in a franchise.

Simple, the series never estabilished any fashion related limitations, so rule of cool and artistic freedom is paramount.

What about Greatsword' Swordfish. Literally just a swordfish

Edit: but speaking of Gunlance, my issue lies not with the fact that it shoots bullets, because we've made cane's that do that, and it's basically just a large Musket w/ Bayonet in concept. It's the reload. You swing the weapon (or thump it on the ground) spent casing are ejected.... And then new shells are magically loaded into the Lance?

CAPCOM EXPLAIN!

Exactly. I mean, we have quite a few armors that are just mech suits. Hell, in Wilds we have the Balahara armor for the Palico which is another mech suit. Nitpicking over small things like Alma's glasses is a complete waste of time.

So, would you all be fine with a swordfish weapon for Alma? Interesting. Some players don’t care about the game at all. This will be the Fortnite of Monster Hunter games.

its very strange you're trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

we had cosmetics to turn our cat into megaman, us into dante, eyepatches, various glasses, and as others have said: regular glasses have been a thing in many monster hunter games.

its just a style choice, it's not really that deep.

It does have a fashion style and limits, of course. How could anyone say otherwise?

Monster Hunter has always emphasized fashion, but its style is deeply tied to the game's pre-industrial, medieval-fantasy setting.

While artistic freedom allows for creativity, the "rule of cool" must still align with the established world. Adding modern elements like modern glasses or hipster headband would break this coherence and feel completely out of place.

The armor sets are inspired by creatures and ancient cultures, staying consistent with the setting. This balance between creativity and consistency is key to maintaining immersion. It ensures the game's identity remains cohesive, allowing players to fully experience its world.

Of course, there are fun elements like cosplay, quirky costumes and weapons like the swordfish. But these shouldn’t and can’t be applied to a main character in the game. These playful designs are meant for lighthearted moments and not for characters who need to stay true to the world’s tone and immersion.

I find it interesting that it's the glasses you find weird and not that some hunters are still using swords to fight giant monsters in melee range when they have access to heavy bowguns.
you'd think the hunters would be a lot more effective if they just sniped every monster from range
