Lance feels terrible.
it's like night and day. Almost all of the positional control that you had playing lance is gone in this game. Powerguard's counter attack you can't seem to control the direction of anymore, and there seems to be no way to enter the counter stance without having to do High Thrust 3 times first. It really feels like a massive downgrade. Compared to World and previous entries the Lance just feels like sludge and sluggish imo

Lance main here. Try using keyboard+mouse with focus set to toggle. Feels really nice

i have used duel blades mainly for many games now ! and while they dont feel horrible infact some ways over powered just like rise the defensive/doging combined with mounted escapes and focus mode strikes is insane but it is not satisfying ! it reminds me of spamming the exact same attack animation for aerial duel blades in GU a really old game but now it has fancy animations that can break half the time lol

You need focus mode to be always active else it awful. It feel nice, just quite different from world.

My major gripe was the leaping thrust after guard dash. You barely move forward it's very bad for catching up the monsters.

The combos just feel so much slower in general and the addition of the 4th attack just makes it harder to reposition around the monster, it was better in worlds because you could always do a hop after the 3rd hit to keep the right distance/position.
The new guard dash + jab combo just feels awful now, the distance it covers feels so little that it feels pointless to use unless the monster is just out of reach.
The lance charge is better to cover bigger distances but the startup to it feels much slower and now I can't chase down monsters running to a new location with it now because they just run faster than the charge now.
After doing a mount finisher why do we land with our weapon sheathed? It just feels awkward having to draw your weapon again while the monster is just lying there knocked down and waiting to be attacked.

I dont see a problem withj the speed of the lance. In terms of balance, you really need to check on different monsters, with different "difficulty levels" to really apreciate whatever or not the lance needs a buff on the speed atack, or you are just playing spamming atacks and forgetting you also get hitted if you are brainless.
regartless, i really enjoyed the lance, specially with the Focus mode, that allows you to be continuesly facing the monster. Combine this with the almost instant shielding on any point of your combo. I barely get hitted. It really shines on the deffensive level, and thats exactly what lance was supposed to do.

Yeah its a definite downgrade for me in how it feels to play. I swapped to maining lance from LS (main since intro'd minus tri) in world and stuck with it through rise. The ease of positioning, counters, and maneuverability were what allowed great uptime to offset the lower dmg. It's OK but just feels slightly worse to use.

If focus mode is the solution then ouch, i'm in for a bad time because I find it too difficult to use on a controller (cant fight the decades of muscle memory to use kbm where its probably much easier)

Oh this makes it easier on my decision to not even worry about this game and not worry about upgrading my pc to play it.

No lance, no buy. Garbage game.

Definitely don't upgrade you pc to just to play this game, at this rate in 10 years devs are going to be selling their games in an exclusive bundle with a pre packaged pc that's built only to run that game with good performance. Bad optimization shouldn't be an excuse for unnecessarily high system requirements and recommended frame generation just to get stable 60 fps.
As for lance just give it a try when they eventually release a demo for the game once it fully releases and decide for yourself, some people seem to prefer this slower playstyle with more control aiming with focus mode. I personally cannot aim for ♥♥♥♥ using an analog stick so I'll be playing lance as I have in world.

This is a highly subjective topic. I, for an instance, dislike instablock. I never got good with it,, so I prefer guard, triple poke and jump. That is how I learned lance, that is how I played lance in several games and that is how I will play lance in the future. And MH Wilds allowed me just that. Is it a meta playstyle, heck no. Was it fun in the demo, heck yes. Maybe I will dabble with different options later down the line, but I got everything down in the beta with the "old school" playstyle besides rey dau, sadly I never saw him in the demo.

So I'm not the only one who feel lance in wilds is worse than world and rise... as a lance main I'm sad

yeah, my beloved lance has changed

I am still torn but I think I kind of like the new lance. I would have prefered for it to be closer to what came before but I think there is enough of it still in there that I can get used to it eventually.

The last thing Monster Hunter needs is yet another counter weapon.
It's literally what every weapon needs since the transition from mechanical monster movements pre 5th gen, to what we have now.

Counter guard was important, because it allowed you to quickly transition to defense while you were attacking, and you cannot do that anymore with lance. Doing the counter off perfectly timing a block isn't the same, because you cannot go from attacking to guarding as quickly as you could using counter guard, and that's the biggest problem I got with the weapon.

Monster Hunter is a game of milliseconds, and that extra time it takes you to raise a shield to block is basically the whole wide world for a window for the monster to hit you in between you attacking and you being able to guard after attacking. If I'm gonna play a commit weapon (which lance most definitely is now), I might as well play Charge Blade or Greatsword.
Unlike before, guarding now cancels animations like hopping does so you don't need a dedicated move to cut down your attack animations to defend. There is some committing with lance now due to the longer combo, but aside from the new combo finisher, you can just use the traditional pokes that can be interrupted with a guard now if you're not confident that you have the time to commit.

I also didn't care for lance in Wilds, I say that as someone who has the majority of hunts in World/Rise with lance.

I still love the weapon overall, and will probably try it again when I beat the progression in Wilds.

I rescind this post. Lance took some getting used too. Damage is low. But that can change.

Was fun getting perfect guards and being the wall against reyrey.
