They're pretty safe to install. I did it myself. Pippy 2.5k that is.

Of the 2, Readius is considered the most buggy. I've used it myself for a long time with no problems, though. Looks nice too:

I highly recommend the 2500, fits the game wonderfully. The 3000 is an abomination.

I've used both of them, like the 2500 just slightly better because of nostalgia for the first two games. Love em though, used them for so long i forgot that pip boys were in gloves.

Note that this also works in Fallout 3 because they're using the same engine. ;-)

That's not true at ALL... New Vegas is using the same engine series, but they are two different engines, and therefore you cannot use fallout 3 esp's/esm's for new vegas.

Apparently, if you equip (then de-equip) the space suit you get during Come fly with me, it permanently removes the pip boy glove without having to use console commands (checked and confirmed on wiki). the left hand of armor does show up when it's removed too. even booted up copy of the game on 360 and works on console as well.
