A FPS mod could fix the clunky feel. The game is obviously an RPG
Yet, Fallout 3 just didn't cllick with me. It was mainly the story and the quests, but the combat was part of it. I don't want a FPS combat-system but the system is FO3 felt clunky at times because VATS was pretty cool, but changing to the regular shooting was a bit meh
Maybe the iron sights will be enough to make the combat more appealing for you.
I just hope the quests and overall story are of a better level too. I know this game is made by obsidian and, personally, I think they're better than bethesda at creating an interesting story. (Although it depends on the game)
With me it's the other way around, so I very rarely play a medieval fantasy game and they usually are Action-adventure games.
But I think I'll give New Vegas a chance with the ultimate edition. It really is too cheap to ignore.
New Vegas - unlike FO3, continues where you left off. Not really where you left off, but you got the NCR and all the factions, instead of how the FO3 storyline was (which was kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ too)
It's a fun game compared to FO3.
Since my only weapon was the worst in the game, I was faced with a conflict. If I almost died taking on a herd of bighorners with my glorified candlestick, maybe taking on all the steel rangers, guys with the toughest armor and the fondest love for technology was a bad idea. So I decided to stratergize. I'd have to get in and get out almost as fast as humanly (and partially inhumanly) possible, so I picked up 5 doses of turbo (super speedy drug), realizing that the brotherhood uses energy weapons and turbo is highly addictive, I picked up a fixer (temporary addiction removal), and atomic cocktail (energy + fire damage resist) as well. I bolted into the BoS bunker, and within 10 seconds of me breeching the bunker, I'd turned their entire turret network against them. within a minute, I had the place under self destruct and about a minute and thirty seconds later, I'd killed probably the toughest group of human soldiers there are, without even pulling a single trigger.
Thats another thing I love about Fallout New Vegas, although your story may seem to repeat, the gameplay has never gotten old for me. There are so many different things you can do in this game, and eventually, you could care less about what ending you get or the battle for hoover dam, and you play it in different circumstances. One time, I decided to be Mary Sue, so I gave myself 10,000 caps, maxed my special and my skills, cranked the difficulty up to max, and went for a one life completion, (Needless to say, I didn't get the one life completion, but I had a heck of a time trying XD) Either way, this game has so much more sandbox potential than FO3, heck, I'd argue it beats GTA 4 even.
There aren't many games where you are given an entire wasteland and told "You see this land? This land may have been torn to shreds by war, death and nuclear devastation, but this is your land. You are going to have a heck of a time defending your land. You aren't letting some 300 year old guy, a two headed bear, and the roman empire take it from you.
I like the VATS system with my melee build. It makes for some cinematic kills. I loved the atmosphere of FO3 more than NV but all the improvements of NV would be sorely missed.
