I get the Error Message: " Failed to start game (app already running)
I get this error message after I laugh FONV from Steam, after I press "play" and then "yes" to verify my system to run it. I do not understand why I am getting this error message. Please help me ASAP.

I'm getting the same error, I have been looking for a fix for several hours with no luck. I have no mods at all, I'm on Vista 64-bit, and I've played the game several times before. Felt like playing the game and now I can't - I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice now, made sure to re-run the redists (repaired on them as well to be sure.) If anyone has found a solution, a share would be nice.

Yep. I found a cure for it though that seemed to work for me - restart after uninstall and reboot after install. I also for extra measure after the last reboot logged out of Steam and restarted it and signed in manually.

wait restart the computer or steam after uninstall? And reboot what after install? And please define the last reboot ( steam or computer). im a bit confused

Check your processes if 'falloutnvlauncher.exe' or 'fallounv.exe' are running when this occurs.

Happens to me once in a while because I've replaced the game's .exe with a 4gb fix one.

Sorry, rebooted the pc after uninstalling - rebooted the pc after reinstalling..and checking for the .exe as a running process was the first thing I checked once I saw the error, it wasn't there. After I the last reinstall and reboot of the pc, I logged completely out of Steam and restarted the Steam client completely and logged back in. Now works without any issue.

do you have trying to lauch other game to view if they say always the same thing, it's strange if you can not find it in the task mananger they say you they are running, do you have trying to make a desktop icon and try to lauch it directly by the game and not by steam,

you can try too to make a shortcut of the falloutnv.exe from your computer and try to view if it's work,

you have perharp a program in conflict with steam, you can look on this to try to find a program like an antivirus they can make probleme with steam...:

I tried the shortcut and launching from the folder. Same error, sadly. @ Nocterum, I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for you, unless something else is getting in the way like an anti-virus program. I've had a lot of trouble from Norton and it's security features (the ones provided with Xfinity internet service.)

Yes, every other game works!

Did you download any mods for this game? If not, I would try uninstalling the game and as well as Steam this time - reboot your pc and reinstall them again. I would before that - disable your anti-virus software. I know these installs are time consuming but it might be worth a try.

*edit*
I actually uninstalled/installed this about 3 times total before I started rebooting my machine. I never uninstalled Steam, but I thought it might be worth a try since you tried my method. Try a registry clean up as well before trying this.

I used MSE awhile back and I am unsure of how it manages programs. I personally would go ahead and disable it while trying the uninstalls and installs of Steam and Fallout New Vegas to see if it's a potential problem with the game. It's at your own risk though - it's unlikely you'll have any viruses popped in on your pc during that period.
