Crashes on startup.

I love this game. but for some reason, now whenever I try to start it, it lingers on the copyright screen for a second, and then crashes to "Fallout NV has encountered a problem..."

I've been running mods, but removing them, reinstalling the game, nothing helps. It's not a fullscreen issue, as it persists even in windowed mode. still more puzzling is the fact that Fallout 3, which works essentially the same way, has no problem running. There hasn't been any real change with my computer that I'm aware of that might have caused this. if anyone is aware of what can be done to fix this, I'd be much obliged.

Specs: runs windows 7, 2G RAM, GeForce GT 430, don't have the processing speed handy I'm afraid.

It freezes for me when im using an xbox controller but when i use the mouse and keyboard it works fine

Having this same problem. Don't understand how so many people have the problem, presumably the same one, it's been a year and it's still happening. Obviously I tried all the suggestions in here

I find it hard to accept the problem as DXx related as the game by default installs the needed files. I know for a fact that i have multible DXs installed and any other game i have can adjust itself to whatever is needed to make it run..
The issue as i see it requires a patch.
<But this prolly wont happen as the game is getting old and is no longer a cashcow.

Reinstall OS wih all ur drivers and then FONV as the very first game n see what happens.

I cant freeking find my installtiondisc and im not up to pay 200 $ for a new OS, so i cant do this myself

I found the d3d9.dll file but when I right click my only options seem to be Extract and Copy...how do I remove this file? I'm using Windows 7.

Deleting that file from within the cab archive is pointless.
As far as I'm aware they are only used when installing directx, which you should already have on your computer. And if not, you'd be better off installing a fresh copy from Microsoft's site. (doing that may in fact actually fix the problem)
You can delete the whole archive if you want, but I seriously doubt it will fix the problem.

fallout will run on all versions of windows. dont replace your operating system.

wat?...just...wh-...huh?...why the hell did that work? deleting d3d9.dll is the games entire graphics for the menues and what not...so why?...i mean it didnt even re-instal and its...just...WHAT? Im so confused!

you should get the necessary files if you run the installers that came with the game.

easy.delete the d3d9.dll file and it works.if,for some reason you dont have it,download it and then delete it.you can find it on the bethsoft faq page.....hope i helped :)

I had the same ridiculous problem. Also I only had the .cab file in the directx directory. It just so happened, that I had a problem with a game not running a few weeks ago. Closing the program xFire actually fixed that problem for me, so I tried it with Fallout and would you guess? Fallout is now working completely fine!
So if you guys maybe have xFire running, close it. It worked for me. For my part, I'll deinstall xFire right now. F*** that program.

yea i stopped using xfire too. got a new graphics card.
