Back in Your Own Backyard quest
is this mission un-winable for anyone else? I have tried killing the hostages, I have tried freeing the hostages - I try not to kill any of the Legion members/dogs in town, because I was on good terms with them until that mission... but I have tried many variations, and every time that a$$hole Ranger Milo NEVER goes back to the checkpoint where the other NCR members are. he stays on top of the hill. you talk to him and he says something about "me and my gun will cover you blah blah" but he wont go back to the checkpoint where you get the mission accomplished and it marks the quest as won/passed. unfortunately I quick saved halfway through the mission so I cant go back and re-try it from the beginning. Im on the verge of using a stealth boy and killing Milo just to fail the quest, even though it will be my first failed quest

I recently completed this mission, I had the companion Boone along on account that if I helped rescue the hostages it goes toward his companion quest. After killing all the legionaires I returned to Milo and he did say that bit about him and his gun, but after exiting dialogue and then talking to him again he responded correctly. I have read that there is a bug in which Milo will not comply until all the legion are dead. Either way you still get Legion infamy even if you don't harm any of them.

-------NO SPOILER-------
The only way I know of is when you are doing the main story quests, I believe it is after you finish the quest "Ring-a-Ding-Ding!" you are met by Vulpes Inculta outside of the Tops casino, and he offers you the Mark of Caesar, which restores your reputation to nuetral and allows you to visit The Fort.

cool, thanks. I just escorted Janet to the Boomers base and we got randomly attacked by a group of 4 or 5 Legion members (near the spot where there's a couple civilians next to a campfire) so they obviously hate me right now if they are seeking me out. unfortunately Janet got killed by the Legion so I quick-loaded to a save several minutes earlier, this time there were no Legion members...

They are random I believe, also even if you have neutral reputation with them, they still patrol and are hostile to ANYONE, so you may want to save frequently, and make sure your autosave with travel is ON. If you are using any human companions then you may lose them over time the more you progress with the Legion, I know for sure Craig Boone despises the Legion and kills on sight, and any non human companions shouldn't be a problem. For your health.

nice Brule reference at the end :D thanks for the tips, I was trying to stay on their good side long enough to finish their quests, but oh well. I dont know far away I am from the ring-a-ding-ding quest, so I guess I will just avoid them until I meet vulpes.

You are welcome :) The quest becomes available quite soon after making it into the strip.
Another way you can play this game is to have one file save where you go all out NCR, and dont bother with the Legion at ALL, then make another file save where you can go all out Legion and rain down a hail of ♥♥♥♥ on the NCR..And of course, for a best of both worlds approach, as mentioned, the mark of Caesar after ring-a-ding..is a good refresher to allow you to get the few missions out of the way.

The RPG element here really, is designed not for you to have the best of both worlds, but for you to follow your preference in role, make a choice and stick by your convictions throughout the game, then perhaps try the whole game again another time, this time, choosing a different path of morality...

unfortunately there are soooo many games I have on my "must play" list that I am trying to do as much as possible in my first playthrough of FNV (I have the ultimate edition with all the DLC) because I dont know when or if I will play through it again when there are so many other games to experience, even re-playing older games like Deus Ex... I just bought the re-release of Final Fantasy VII pc from the Square Enix site (I was really bummed to see that Steam doesnt have it yet) so in between FNV sessions I started FF7 as well :D
This game is massive. You can't ''quickly'' play through it, the game needs to be enjoyed like a vintage brandy, not like a can of Fosters I'm afraid, sorry. My Brother is always busy doing other things and he doesnt get much time to enjoy Fallout, it's just a classic RPG which requires your patience and commitment. Otherwise you forget where you were up to. To summarise, there isn't a quick way, only a long way lol Oh, and how can you blasphemise Fallout by playing another RPG inbetween???Get out of the Fallout forum, no pretenders allowed! lol

I am a huge Fallout fan, I bought the ultimate edition of Fallout 3 with all the DLC, it was amazing. and so far New Vegas has been really awesome too. I understand it requires patience and commitment, which is why right now its the only game I am playing (besides the ocassional 20 minute FF VII recess) and once I have finished New Vegas I will probably uninstall it because there are many other games I want to try, and I dont know when I would ever get to play NV again, but it will stay in my Steam library forever so if/when I am ready to play through it again (Im a good guy this time, maybe next time I will be a bad guy) I will have access to it, plus I want to try mods for it next time
I know you will.

not to mention I have 47 hours invested into FNV so far, I want to see this through to the end before playing my next (major) game
I am glad to hear that. I've clocked up a venerable time on that game, it is so good. The story is what grabs my attention. I am definitely NOT a fan of final fntsy..dont know why, maybe its the layout..and I'm very science-orientated, if magic is involved I'm walking...
