The last time I went into the Divide, I was carrying enough crap I was going to sell to buy all three mods for both the SMMG and Red Glare. Just need to carry high-value weapons around and make sure they're repaired. :P
Back up weapon: Modded: Currently looking for a decent shotgun (Hint, Hint) Vanilla: Ranger Sequoia with normal .45-70 Gov't rounds.
Get a fully modded Hunting Shotgun. Has excellent range (for a shotgun) and little spread. You could just get the Combat Shotgun from a handful of mods, but eh.
I meant modded in downloaded shotguns. The Hunting Shotgun is excellent, but I like the idea behind the lever-action shotgun, it's just that the one in the game is weak and doesn't look good to me.
It's based off the Model 1887, which is probably the strongest per-shell shotgun in MW3. I know that there are mod mods that decrease the spread, increase the ammo limit, and do more damage, but I'm not that experienced with weapon-only mods to advise otherwise.

Early: MF Hyperbreeder Alpha
Mid: YCS/186, MF Hyperbreeder Alpha
Late: Holorifle, MF Hyperbreeder Alpha
As you may have noticed, I'm a big fan of the MF Hyperbreeder Alpha. That's because it's ridiculously overpowered in a crit build with the right perks.
Guns: AMR
Melee: Rolling Pin (Or maybe I haven't ever done a melee character)
Unarmed: Two-Step goodbye
Explosive: Escher
Energy Weapons: Holorifle
Guns: Medicine Stick
Melee: Chance's Knife
Unarmed: FoR
Explosive: A thousand frag grenades.
That few? O.o
I second his opinion... Along with the Unique .45 (Light Shining in The Darkness) (Need Honest hearts to get).... And for when things get too close for comfort, Riot Shotgun.
