“Save failed; Storage Device is No Longer Available” Error
Hey all!

So I’ve been running a modded New Vegas play through for the last month or two and up until recently I’ve had absolutely no issues whatsoever.

Acouple weeks ago I had my first ever encounter with a “save failed” error after quicksaving and when I say first I mean first in the last 13 years of playing New Vegas and the last 3 years of modding on PC. When I tried to manually save it gave me an error to the likes of “the storage device is no longer available.” Oddly enough during this first encounter it had somehow fixed itself and I didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to this week and the problem had resurfaced WHILE I was already in game and had been for acouple hours with no issue. Only this time it is still persisting.

After doing some research I found that a common “fix” is going to the save folder in the “my games” NV folder and unclicking the “read only.” Seemed simple enough however when I found it didn’t work I went back and found it was still checked. I’m at a loss and don’t know where to go from here so if anybody has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Will it allow you to save if you load up an older save? Maybe your save got corrupted somehow.

As for the read-only thing, I remember having that problem for some other game, but not sure how I fixed it. Maybe try disabling Windows Defender, atleast the folder access part of it, and see if that is the cause of your problems. And ofc, the ol' "run it as administrator."

Do you have any mods that affect saving in any way?

For me it was a really simple fix:

The "Saves" folder was somehow completely missing, just had to make a new one under Documents>MyGames>FalloutNV

Edit: I also made an exception in windows security to exclude my documents folder. Also good practice to do this for your game folder and other Mod Manager related folders and programs etc if you value your modding experience.

Hope this helps :D

For anyone curious, I own New Vegas and Fallout 3 through GOG and recently did a clean install of both for a TTW playthrough.
I think its unlikely, but possibly due to per profile saves set as active in Vortex before switching to M02? (yes I use both, and yes I disabled per profile saves in Vortex in search for a fix, but again, don't think it was the culprit)
While uninstalling through the galaxy manager I clicked the option to remove game saves as well (not exactly sure on the specifics on what this removes, and I'm too lazy to check :P). This might have deleted the "Saves" folder and not just the game saves themselves?
Maybe I didn't run the NV launcher so the folder never got remade on reinstall? None of my other FNV stuff in documents was missing, everything else was there, as I checked the ini files for settings related to save location before I figured out the problem.
I could have done something with the folder and just not remember...
Might have gotten moved/deleted by small children or cats that randomly mess with my setup and mash my keyboard and mouse whenever possible.
I dunno lol, I do way too much ♥♥♥♥ on my computer to try and pin it on one thing i guess :P
