General advice :
Chemistry sets can be used to make 5 stimpaks.
You can make stimpacks pretty easily from stuff gathered in the Big MT and then refined by the Sink appliances.
Lots and lots of enemies in the Big MT are robotic, so the sonic gun, the proton axe and similar are very useful.
DPH is more important than DPS.
Anything with high damage per shot is good. If you have Shotgun Surgeon and Coin Shot or equivalent, that will work well too if you have Dinner Bell or a normal Hunting Shotgun. ALSITD works well too.
Though its rather difficult to aquire, it is very useful and worth your time to get anyways.
A Light Shining in Darkness.
Joshua Graham's .45 pistol.
1. The scorpions have insane HP and take a lot of ammo to down.
2. The nightstalkers do crazy damage.
For 1, I use my big hitters. Medicine Stick, AMR, Holorifle, YCS/186, that kind of thing. Even for a guns character, the proton axes and the antenna you can find in there are actually quite good if ammo is an issue.
For 2, I go for weapons with consistently high damage per second. The Survivalist's rifle is one such weapon. The SMGs are great too here. I'm sure the dog guns are good too, but they never seemed as good to me as the weapons I just mentioned.
You say you are running low on health, so a really good perk to solve that problem would be Them's Good Eatin'. That perk will solve your health problems... permanently. It'll also bring in crazy amounts of money.
Finally, I want to mention that if you really want to exploit the heck out of the game, Christine's sniper rifle is silenced. What that means is that you can keep sneak critting any enemy that hasn't seen you for massive damage. Even if you shoot them, they don't go into combat with you.
It has been argued back and forth that the CoS (if you are a Luck/Crit build) is far superior to the AM. If you are strolling around with a luck of less than maybe 6 or 7...the AM may be a better option...more frontal damage and less dependent on a Crit.
If you are playing in HC mode....NEVER go AM...the weight of the ammo alone is just unefficient. I carry 200 5.56 handloads and 200 .308 handloads at all times...everytime I get back to base, I make sure to restock or dump off to rebalnce to 200 rounds per.
