Hated vs vilified (powder gangers)
Do you only get auto attacked when vilified and hated is ‘you have one last chance’?

Restarted with some mods (josh sawyer for extra survival stuff) and did the good springs quest to fight off the powder gangers as usual

This time I only got hated by them instead of vilified so they aren’t attacking me on sight. I tested some stuff by killing some nearby to get vilified and they attack me at the correctional facility as normal

I assume a few things might have happened

1) I didn’t kill enough in the fight to get vilified just hated and hated doesn’t automatically mean a faction shoots on sight

2) the mod adjusts the reputation where you get less hate for fighting that fight in good springs

3) scripting error

It was 1. I always just let the fight play out and lose minimal reputation so I can still do ncrf quests

There is a couple of quests you can do to regain some some rep and get rid of the vilified status. One of them is saving 2 powdergangers who were captured by the Legion after they attacked a small town(quest initiated by talking to a guy in the general store of that town) the other one is kinda tricky but i will only say it's a quest you get inside a vault.

Personally i don't waste my time by gaining some rep with the pg, they will eventually attack you if you come too close to one of their camps. I use them to level-up and they aren't much of a problem if you stay on the road. Unlike the Legion, they won't go outside of their territory to get you. PG are mostly located in the Primm area and the NCRCP(the jail place) so if you want to avoid them stay on the road between Primm and NCR outpost.

If you want to deal with them try to find a good arsenal of weapons and a good supply of healing stuff - i little trick of mine, when you see a pg try to lit a dynamite stick use VATS to aim at the dynamite - it will cause the dynamite to explode and cripple/kill the guy.

Rep doesn't work that way in this game. When you're vilified you can't remove the negative status.

Rep has two stats, fame and infamy. They both go up but never to down (besides when you get absolved of crimes by NCR and Legion at one point in the main story, this simply removes any infamy you have), and you can only fill the rep meter a certain amount of combined infamy and fame.

There's more details on it here.

Yeah you/re right of course. i thought maybe the 2 quests i had in mind could help because you get some good karma by giving 5 Med-X to the cripple PG in Nipton's general store.

On a side note i think the karma system is kinda broken a bit - killing powder gangers, raiders, fiends, vipers or Legion is auto good karma even if objectively speaking it's still a murder even if it's without provocation. Also if i kill a Great Khan it's auto-bad karma even if they are drug dealers. However It's a really fun game (even with the bugs lol) no matter how you play it that's why i like it so much.
