What items do you craft?
So far, I make weapon repair kits (when i find a wrench) and recycle drained energy cells and haven't made much else.

Pretty much only weapon repair kits and purified water.

The list of things to make is massive...

I'm just now understanding that cactus water is purified water and can be crafted. I think I've got a lot of prickly pear fruit.

The main and valuable items to craft.. Weapon repair kits are always amazing. Not only can they repair your expensive weapons cheap (maybe not waste them on a 9mm lol), but you can make money with them. Buy low durable very expensive weapons from merchant, repair with repair kits, re-sell back to merchants for profit. The number 1 items you should always make if you have the material.

Other nice items. Party time mentats, rocket, slasher, rushing water, etc stuff that boosts
combat easier. I never make food items, plenty of stims and sassparilla and purified water except on hardcore mode. Bottlecap mines i love also. Most other stuff isn't work making.

But its always good to just save up items and see what you really need later in the game. There isn't any rush to do it, you can always sell off items later. Plus with dlc add ons like old world blues its vastly easier to make certain things, or gather plants in honest hearts, or get tons of
money from dead money.

If you are playing hardcore, make Hydra. Its a really useful chem that can heal your limbs over time.

Most of the items that make you extremely overpowered are craftables, chems, ammo, magazines, etc. It might require a few perks to make them work but they're well worth it, like for example comprehension and magazine making perk. It grants you 10% critical chance on top of the +20 to every skill, that is as long as you have enough wonderglue to craft the magazines.

Yeah, pretty much what everyone else said. Plus armor repair kits from a mod since it didn't make much sense to me that you can make stuff to repair your weapons, but you can't do the same for your armor.
