What the hell is wrong with you ?
No, they do not. You might as well eat cardboard steeped in saltwater and soy sauce.
Improved crap is still crap.
For what it`s worth, my palate is probably much more refined than yours.
Back in the nineties they weren't that bad; stayed away from spaghetti, beef stew and a few others. I thought the inclusion of MREs was fascinating considering the missile base was an old world military base.
Ham Slice, Omelet, Scalloped Potatoes, Peanut Butter, Cheese and Crackers - yummy. Oh, MREs have fiber, protein and carbs and are rated at roughly 2K calories where a single MRE is complete nutrition for an active person. MREs also came in water proof, air tight packages that also prevented chemical/biological contamination. Let us not forget that they also included candy and toilet paper as well as real coffee in opposition to stale cheesy poofs, old vault magazines and wasteland brew - yuck.
For DLC content Lonesome Road followed by Old World Blues gets you set up pretty well then toss in GRA with the Courier's Stash and everything else is just waiting for you to pounce it. I also thought the bed role was nice, but to heavy as sleeping roles/bags are not that heavy.
At first I thought MRE was a block of food product where its sole purpose is to keep its user properly nourished regardless of how bad the thing tastes, but the truth is its actually gourmet food compared to school lunches in many developing countries.
They were better, or at least more varied, than what we`d get in the cantina. Boiled sweets, mint bars, fruitcake, various spreads, crackers, chicken dumplings and whatever is a nice change from school food.
But compared to the stuff you can cook with even little skill and a short time it wasn`t exactly competitive, and it`s trash compared to something a half decent cook can whip up with decent quality ingredients.
True, I just eat them since I have the option. They are really meant for when you can't get to a field kitchen. Imitation pork rib isn't the same as the real one, but it's good none the less. When did you try yours?
I had no idea that so many of you abroad had contact with MREs at such an early age; makes me angry because I wish I was there to meet you all. Thanks for the share - kewl. And, yes they suck compared to good old fashioned home made as does fast food and anything else. I am nothing more than a stomach with ears and food is food.
Now Rations from Central-Euro, African, and Asian countries are pretty bad.
Observe:
The Ukrainian officer's meal (The officers eat this stuff, I don't want to know what the soldiers eat)

Lithuania's ration (not too bad)
