FOMM and Steam?
So I'm curious and can't seem to find a straight answer, but is it possible to install mods through FOMM for Fallout: New Vegas and still be able to have my play time tracked and still be able to unlock achievements? I've seen people say that the external launcher needs to be renamed and placed in the steamapps folder under the game and etc etc but I just want to be certain.
Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas have amazing mod communities and I want to use mods with New Vegas, but I'm also a little skeptical as to whether or not Steam will still track my play time and unlock achievements, which I would honestly like to keep doing. If anyone can help me with this question I'd be very appreciative.

I'll tell you how I do it:

  • To get NVSE working from Steam I rename the FNV launcher EXE to a temporary filename and then rename the NVSE EXE to "FalloutNVLauncher.EXE".

  • To install or adjust what mods I'm using I run Nexus Mod Manager, install mods or make adjustments and then I exit NMM once I'm done.

  • I then launch FNV from Steam and bask in the glory! :)

Would this work for FOMM as well? I don't specifically use NVSE.
The only time I've found trouble is when using the 4GB Loader to start the game. Playtime is still tracked, but things like screenshots are in a separate section and I have to manually make them public now.

No issues with playtime or achievements. The only time I've had trouble with it is, as Dosbilliam says, when using the 4GB Loader.

Stop recommending this, it is completely unnecessary. Launching the game with Steam's UI will load NVSE as long as the files are present.

Alright. Thanks Ladez. It's reassuring to know this. I have numerous mods already downloaded and installed through FOMM and I just wanted to be sure. I appreciate the help :)

Well, I just tested that and it does not work here at all!
NVSE was designed to work with Steam since the only legal way to play the game is through Steam. If it doesn't work for you, it could have something to do with you renaming the executable.

Furthermore, I did not "recommend" anything in this thread, I merely told the OP "how I do it".
Telling OP that 'this is how I do it' does not make it any less of a recommendation, although it is more of an implied one rather than a straight up 'here's how you do it.'

What? How on Earth could what I said be construed as rude? :/

Don't be so touchy.

This is an abrupt statement and I honestly don't see anything wrong with that. The sentence communicates a few things shortly and clearly: that I believe the measure to be unnecessary - given the functionality that is built into NVSE - that it being recommended is an ongoing problem and that I'd prefer more practical measures to be recommended instead. It is not rude or offensive. You chose to interpret in that way.

This is something I chose to say in response after being accused of being rude. Contrary to the previous statement, it could be construed as a bit insensitive and that is not without intent. You felt offended by what I said and called me rude. That was an excessive response.

It's your manner. You can come across as bossy and brusque: "Stop recommending this" "Don't be so touchy". It can rub people up the wrong way..
I admit to sometimes writing in a manner that does not cater too much to the feelings of the individual. When I share information, as opposed to chatting in a relaxed manner, I always try not to allow it to be obscured by too much personal sentiment. I believe that to be a more effective way of making myself clear.

It does actually.

You could relate to someone the method you use to achieve something while specifically NOT recommending that they follow your lead. One does not dictate the other. I'm not personally inclined to recommend to a stranger that they start renaming files on their machine but if they want to copy what I did then to see if it works then that's on them. It's passive relating of experience as opposed to active recommendation.
But you did not - not - recommend it. What you wrote was an implied recommendation, being that you offered this experience in response to someone who was asking for help and did not in any way relay information as to whether this solution was more/less practical than others.

Of course the OP doesn't even use NVSE so our whole conversation is pretty much pointless. :)
I wouldn't say that. My original response was pretty much on point, even though it doesn't adress OP specifically.

Brusque or abrubt, to some degree yes. Bossy or rude, no. You may disagree with my way of conducting myself, but you may not call me things to my face without any reason for it.
