I think that's arguably the better choice too, actually the only way they're particularly comparable, I suppose is if This Machine *somehow... made it's way onto the Grunt list. Stick + Cowboy + Hand loaded ammo = one overpowered gun! :-)
This Machine isn't bad, I've killed my share of Deatchlaw with it, but it's more of a 'jack of all trades, master of none' weapon... Nothing really wrong with that!
*Well, let's not be quite so coy about that... If my understanding is correct, there are a couple mods that allow that gun to be added to the Grunt thing.
That said, if I were treating this as a game instead of a role playing experience, the best weapon in the game is a Riot Shotgun with slugs and high gun skill and lots of VATS. Everything dies, everything dies quickly.
