Dead Money certainly doesn't spoon feed you.
(1.The mechanics in the DLC discourage exploration.
(2. Bomb Collar. I actually wouldn't mind the bomb collar, if it wasn't for the damn radios and speakers. Why is every single radio and speaker active over 200 years after the war? Come on..
(3. The cloud. Again see number 1
(4. Lack of enemy variety. You literally fight the same enemy over and over. The Ghost people..
(5. All your gear gets stripped. I thought the explanation ingame for why you couldn't bring gear into the DLC was lazy.
(6. Bugs.. Even with Yup installed, I've encountered annoying bugs in Dead Money. I was able to correct them with the console. Still annoying though.
Overall it's an awful DLC. I liked the items, perks, the story characters. I hate playing through Dead Money though. It's just not enjoyable..
Basically, this is a DLC you should play yourself to get a verdict. It's a very controversial DLC, some people hate it, some people love it to death. Up for you to decide which camp you fall into.
They could have done better than one enemy.. come on now. Unless you count radroaches and a couple turrets lol.
For me it helped build tension and kept the main themes central. If I had the freedom to roam for hours, then it would lose its appeal. That's a big problem I have with OWB.
And what about holograms? Those were different enemies.
The first time I played Old World Blues. I didn't explore much at all. I pretty much did the quests and left. I didn't prepare my character well enough the first time. I was almost out of ammo by the end of the DLC. I didn't know enemies were going to spawn constantly.
Holograms aren't an enemy. They are a mobile trap that can chase you. They can't be killed only disabled.
That's an interesting point about the holograms, though, never thought of it that way.
Tl dr: after ending the vanilla game, everyone wanted to know more about the Courier backstory and Ulisses. Hints were left in the original game by Obsidian, and the hype was high.
When DM was released, its narrative brought more questions than answers. Many people felt confused, expecially since the dlc was quite hard and guided. Few felt "rewarded" by that proving expirience, even if, storywise, it was very well written. It needed the others dlc to be completly understanded, a point few liked.
So, to sum up: drastic change of gameplay+obscure narrative+"episodic" structure=rustled jimmies.
IMO, it's not the worst NV dlc. HH was much more boring. And at least, it's not Operation Anchorage...
