Sterling's gun and Raul's quest

I need a definative answer about something.
I really want to get my hands on the La Lounge Carbine owned by Corp Sterling at camp McCarain but then I also want to properly finish Raul's companion mission "Old School Goul" and from what I can tell from the wiki, it requires that Sterling stays alive until the mission is complete!
Is this true or can I just talk with Sterling first, get Raul's input then kill Sterling for his rifle and still complete Raul's quest?
Let me know...I have plenty of missions I can complete meanwhile while awaiting a response so no rush.

well if no one answers, you could save rauls companion quest until near the end of the game. then test your method out and see if his ending correctly corresponds to what it should be upon completing his companion quest. But i would believe that if you complete his quest (get the perk that corresponds to however you decided to end it) then it SHOULD be save to kill sterling, i could be wrong though.

Another option would be to console command it in then save and restart the game so you can continue on with achievements and stuff

I managed to come up with a solution that didn't involve me killing him. With Recon Armor, 2 La Fantoma magazines and 2 Stealthboys I was first able to pickpocket his ammo and then waited 24 hours in an off base location, returned then with second magazine and stealthboy I was able to swap my custom Cowboy Repeater with 100% repair and two attached mods (fare thee well) for his unique one with him none the wiser! Feel free to use this method folks! Its quite effective!
