Is it natural to go to New Vegas straight out of Goodsprings, or am I just weird?
So yeah. With some clever navigation I made my way from the Goodsprings Graveyard to Black Mountain, had a little boss fight with a Nightkin that involved tons of narrow dodges, then headed to Camp Mccarran and boarded the monorail when the guards went around the corner. Right now I'm about to head off to meet Caesar, and since this is my first serious playthrough and I'm not very far in I want to know if I should restart, just in case I'm missing out on the experience somehow.

you are rushing it a bit and most likely will miss out on side quests, but hey, it's your game. play it how you want. you can go through nice and slow on the next run and do everything.

Well I have 750+ hours in and am on my fourth playthrough. Twice I have taken the shortcut to Vegas and have NOT lost any side quests by doing so. It's just harder to get there alive early in the game. You can still wander the wasteland and pick up all quests that you would have gotten had you gone the long way around.

I don't think "natural" has anything to do with it. It's certainly possible, you just have to ignore everyone you speak to, ignore every posted sign you read, etc. I don't think it's typical for first time players to pull it off but lots of folks give it a try eventually.

I like it because A) it's a huge challenge to take on Cazadores and Radscorpions with an unmodified varmint rifle and a 9mm SMG and B) You can do lots of speech-based quests, get a home, money, access to better weapons and level up a bit before coming at the Legion full-bore.

Now, I would be impressed if someone started a vanilla game on hardcore and went straight to the quarry to kill the Deathclaws...lol Obviously without mods or cheats, etc. I can't imagine that would even be possible...well, it would be hard to believe at any rate.

On my first playthrough I went straight to New vegas and did pretty well, but by the time I was able to see New Vegas I was almost dead. I went north through cazador and fiend territory. With me it was more of a "They told me to go south, so I'll go North."

Even though I did it, I don't think it is natural for most people to go straight to New Vegas, on their first playthrough anyway. I think it is more for experiance players.

Ever since I did it I have yet to go north from the start.

I seem to remember it was similar for me except I decided the signage was there for a reason after I picked a fight with a deathclaw...lol Took me a few more playthroughs before I tried it again.

See, that's the funny thing. I didn't even fight any of the deathclaws, just sneaked past them by jumping on a few choice rocks, then made my way to Black Mountain and cut through there.

^^^That's the place where people who pretend to be stupid get sent to when they are naughty.

Sounds like a magical place.
I tried to go north but the Deathclaws got me. Then I tried the cazadore route... and they killed me. Curious as how people sneak past either of these mean creatures.

I found a random stealth boy in the shop in goodsprings so I bought and ran like hell for Vegas. I needed to go gambling
The game wants you to go south to Primm and beyond so it can give you some exposition. It also gives you a lot of XP and caps along the way. That way you can actually get into The Strip once you get there.

Just play it however you want, then once you finish, it play it again with a different approach

I took "the Cazadore route" on my current playthrough. NW from the cemetery at Goodsprings, along the ridge there, down into a gulley to by-pass the ammo consuming radscorpions, and then had to fight my way through several nests of those nasty flying demons. The 9mm SMG I stole from "Mole-butt" helped a lot. Up to the high ground to sneak past the few Deathclaws, sniped a few Powder-Gangers and strolled on up to McCarran.

It's entirely "do-able" and you don't need any special skills or stealth-boys to do it either.

You do need to save your game an awful lot though.

I tried that once... I made it past the quarry but when the pass opens up again near that old train station there are deathclaws in the hills on both sides of road. They caught my scent quick... think I had about 7 of them chasing behind me in one long chain. I had a Broad Machete and a 10mm gun. I think you can guess how it turned out.

;)
