Can I reset my skill points?
Hello everyone,

I'm lvl 20 and just started playing the dlc which is recomended you be lvl 15 or above. The one that takes place in big mountain.

Up to this point I've been trying to spread my skill points out relatively evenly, and have everything save 2 items up to around 45 or 50. But i'm having a whole lot of trouble with this bit of DLC even after being so high lvl.

So I wanted to know if there was anyway I could retrive my skill points and re-distribute them to where they'd do me more good?

If you wanted to crack open the console and spend a few minutes writing down where each skill started and where it is now, then keep track of how many points you remove from each, then change the skills you want to improve with player.modav (skill name) #...

Otherwise, restarting.

I'm not above going into the console. is there an easier way to do that though?

Could I set my lvl back to 1 (so the game resets my skills to where they were) then set my lvl back to 20 (and get all the points to distribute as I see fit)?

The game is supposed to be an RPG, your not really role playing if you are just spending your points into everything. With all the DLCs though it is possible to get them all 80+. I'm not sure if there is a way to reset your level to 1, but you can level yourself up in the consol commands. Something that you should note is that if you use the console then you don't get any achivments from there on in if you care.

Changing your level with console does not directly reset your skill points. you could try to change your XP to 0, your level to 1 and skills to 15 or whatever they stated as, and then I think there was a console command for redoing the character creation thing. If that works give yourself your XP back so you level up again. Note that using "set"-command makes whatever value it is that number permanently, while "add" or "mod" increases the current value with given value and allows it tho change later.

If that works, save and quit, than restart the game and after you load the save you can get achievements again.

Relevant:
player.advlevel - Levels the player up by one level, but does not add the experience points. While you gain all level perks, etc, you will not level again until you have made up all the points for the levels gained by this command and the experience required for the next level.

player.rewardxp 15000 - adds 15000 exp. Any levels gained will be granted immediately, one after the other. (You cannot subtract experience using player.rewardxp -n. Attempting player.modav xp -n displays the message "Actor value 'XP' cannot be modified in scripts or the console.")

*sigh* well I guess I'll have to start a new game. my goal was to get most of the skills around the 45 or 50 area, then lvl up the ones I want to keep from there.

oh thanks for the tip trooper. I have used the console commands in past saves, that explains why I don't have a few achievements I know i've done (the one where you get all the companions being among them).

my goal was to try and beat the game in survival mode, oddly, up to this dlc I haven't really had any major trouble with the game. everything just worked for me. though that could be beacuse I have had companions since novac....hm, I supposed I could wait on the dlc till the very end of the game, get me more time to get my skills up to snuff. I just don't want to play through the game so soon after just going through it recently.

You can use the 'Auto-Doc', located in the 'Sink' to test your psyche. Allowing you to reset your skills

oh awesome! um...where is the auto doc? i've looked all over, and I haven't seen high or low of a medical machine to help me heal some of these wounds i'm getting.

That only works for traits, not your skill points.

Companions greatly reduce the difficulty of combat so yeah missing them would make the game way harder all of the sudden.

OWB levels with you.
I think they all do.
HH I was fighting enemies equipped with AMRs
OWB.... Gatling lasers and Gauss.
Can't wait to get to Lonesome road.
I love a good fight.

A tip for OWB and it's robots...Melee and Proton Axe.

I'm level 40 and none of my skills are below 70. My primary skills are maxed.

oh, so I could have done the dlc right at the start instead of waiting to get to the apropriate lvls?

You could, but it will be tough without appropriate levels, gear and perks.

Also some DLC gear only appears after some levels, so you might miss some gear too.

well, i'm glad I didn't go into any of the dlc before I got up to this lvl. I guess i'm having the difficulties because I'm suddenly w/out followers. Though my boone died, and i'm running around with the brotherhood scribe atm.
