How to kill Davison?

automatic weapon, spray & pray. You cannot use VATS on a hidden enemy, either with cover(those body parts that that are behind a table,e.g.) or stealth ability. But you still see a "shimmer", aim for center and unload, 'splosives work well too.

Why fight him ?
He's not alone you know.
There is a peaceful option.

Make a deal with him to get rid of the ghoul in the storage area, make a deal with the ghoul in the storage area so he'll leave, go to the terminal on the 2nd floor of the room, read the ones with stealthboys being returned, go back to davison, tell him where they are, they leave.

The peaceful option only works if you haven't killed most of the other Nightkin. The Jailer is okay, because you have to get through him to find Harland's girlfriend (need all optionals to complete the quest), but the others cause him to be hostile.

[Dosbilliam, Boring but Practical]

As long as you bring about 3 Stealth Boys into the basement after looting the Nightkin corpses around the area, you can get through the entire basement part without combat.

You cannot kill Davison! Antler protects Davison! Antler make you pay if you hurt Davison!

you can still shoot him if they go invisible. you can see him barely. i just use a flame pistol from the hundred of dead ghouls that carried them. set him on fire. never lose track

Or you can go get Ed-E. He let's you target Nightkin in VATS
