What way do you distribute your skill points?
Hi,

Wondering how everyone else used their skill points. For example, i used to do an even split of 5 in Repair, Science, Guns and Speech. Now i think i will boost more on one at a time. How do you do it?

I think it all depends on what sort of character you are planing on playing. Generally a jack of all trades doesn't do as well as someone specializing in a few areas. Thankfully you should be able to max out most of your skills in New Vegas.

I believe that people will usually focus on one of the gun skills, one of either science or lockpicking (most doors/chests/locked things can either be accessed by computer or lock picking). I always like speech because I enjoy the conversations and story plots that become more available with high speech.

Again, it all depends on what sort of character you want to play.

For some reason I always end up boosting Repair first.

I try to put 1 on every skill so I can look for skill books befor maxing a skill plus the perk that grants a bonus point for reading them

I tried using all the points in one skill (think it was 16 points in energy weapons) but i lost out on a lot of unique dialogue options and loot due to having low science and speech. Think i'll just stick to using an even spread

I suggest multiple playthroughs with different builds each time. Roleplaying aside, trying to complete each quest in different ways depending on your skills, attributes and perks is one of the most fun things to do, adding another layer of challenge in the game. Speech checks have certain benefits, making your life easier in general and providing you with bonus rewards, but you're missing out on content. That said, if you're going for a generic build and completely ignoring roleplaying elements, Guns, Repair and Speech is one of the best combos to get you through the game.
Get Lockpick and Science up to 50 along with my weapon skill and Barter to the same level, Repair up to 75 or 90 if I'm feeling game-breaky, and I try to have at least 45 Speech before Boulder City to get all the major Speech options before then.
I'd just level up certain things one at a time but then again you'll need all of them :(

Guns, repair, lockpicking, speech, energy weapons, and medicine are the skills I focus on.

I'm usually motivated by quests. If I need a particular skill level to finish a quest, or direct it in a certain way, I'll take a break and get as much XP as I can to level up until I have enough skill points in a particular area. I've neglected a few areas, unfortunately, and most of it is in Lockpick (100) and Speech (80). A ton had to go into speech, because my Charisma was set at 1 in the beginning.

I think the most important ones are Speech and Barter, that's only if you like the story dialogues and converstions, but still Speech is generally needing alot due to the fact it gives you different choices in some quests

I really should have clarified that i was on about the system you use when applying points, not what points you add, as it would change from build to build
Aim for either the multiples of 25 or get them close enough to do that on the next level.

oh, then i aggre with Dos aim atlast for multiples of 25.
