Forced to Fail quests in Honest Hearts DLC

I just started playing this and I am just doing what the game says, but it enemies with special names pop up and shoot me and I am forced to kill them. Then I get the QUEST FAILED message. I'm frustrated that I cannot play that content now. What am I doing wrong?

I didn't initiate the fight though. I'm just walking around. Thus far every npc I have met has been hostile since my caravanners died.

Because you shot Follows Chalk. He isn't hostile, but you went and shot him anyway. Now everybody hates you. You're going to have to find the map and get out of Zion.

Damn. Well I save often, so I'll just re-do it since I'm not far into the story. I really want to experience as much content I can. Thank you for the help Two Bears.

Yeah here's where you have to be careful, after the initial assault you cross a bridge, somewhere close to the other side a white-legs guy will shoot at you. Don't bother to try and kill him, Follows-chalk does it for you, then you go up and talk with him. If you try and shoot the white-legs guy up there, you may hit, and subsequently piss off Chalk and everyone else.
