The space helmet is bugged/has a unique feature, and lets you equip it in addition to many other actual helmets.

For instance, all the riot gear helmets. That's +4 DT for no weight,

its not bugged its counting as sunglasses. like the Tri-valence radii accentuator.

whats bugged is the riot helmet NOT counting as glasses.

when I equppied it and went to the little hut with the radiation swamp about it, I killed all of the marauderer things but still got rad poisoning quite quickly compared to what I thought it would be??

The space suit itself has 40% radiation resistance. The helmet only adds DT.

Could be wrong, but I seem to remember there being a suit in Old World Blues as well, in a heavily irradiated zone.

well to be fair 40% resist isn't all that much. for safety reasons i would take rad x in heavily irradiated zones even when using the suit (if it says 1 rad a second though dont take rad x it will do nothing in that case just get out quickly).
