Tips on using 'Mercy"...
...I love the idea of it, but when deploying, I do as much damage to myself as any enemy I'm gunning for

It's best for mid-range fights from stealth, or to cover an area of Cazadors with death. Otherwise, the Grenade MG is one of the most useless weapons in the game because it's so situational it'd be easier to just pull out a Fat Man and some Tiny Tots.

The best way to use it is to not equip it.

This kind of true. Not an extremely practical weapon.

The only time I've found real use for it is when using Warzones, and that's only because it turns New Vegas into a raider version of Dead Rising.

The only reason to use it is to kill yourself.

For that reason, I suggest taking Splash Damage to make that significantly easier.

You should never hurt yourself when using any explosive weapon. Practice using your splash damage, you should figure out what the closest to you you can hit without taking damage for each explosive weapon is, and then shoot for that distance when things get close.

For fighting in enclosed spaces, just spam the ♥♥♥♥ out of everything before you enter, will prevent you from getting stuck in a fight where you cannot defend yourself without damaging yourself.

That being said, it makes me sad that they didnt put any of the buckshot/starshot 40mms in the game, but that would make the weapon class even more overpowered than it already is.

I created a space marine devastator build that used the upgraded 25mm grenade machine gun. I didn't like mercy, but the 25mm is a heavy bolter. With all the toughness perks and splash damage while wearing T51-b power armour you hardly feel a thing at point blank.

Yeah, part of it is about knowing how to use your weapon, but I'm not sure how you will perform when using it in a closed environment, but if you do stock up on morphines, buffouts and other things to mitigate damage.

Thanks for the tips, guys. That helps. I'm aware of my splash damage radius, but this thing seems like the radius is so far out, it basically nulllifies any advantage to having a rapid fire aspect. I was experimenting with it in the Cave of the Abbadon in LR....just spamming grenades into the massses. But what I considered "mid-range" was still way within the blast radius of the grenades, and I don't have any 'explosive' perks that would increase it.

So I guess the best advice I got from this thread is...leave the damn thing at home.

It's easy to use, even with splash damage.

It works wonders in close quarters when you have heavy armor to negate some of the damage, or when you get enough time using it and you know how to angle it so it only does damage to enemies.

"I am aware of my splash damage radius yet am not". And you used to many words to type it to :D.

Do you kill the ♥♥♥♥ out of yourself with normal explosives? If you cant use the 40mms then the fatman is probably going to kill the ♥♥♥♥ out of you whenever you use it :D. That being said you probably never have to use it. The fatman with all the explosive perks is particularily silly, it will kill the user across the distance of the novac hotel fenced in area, and its fine one minute, hit an inch closer and dead :D.

The fatman gets even worse if you use mods such as Signature Weapons. You can increase the splash radius to nearly 200% of it's normal without the use of the explosive perks. Took me longer than I care to admit to realize I had turned my fatman into a "one shot kills the wasteland, myself included" weapon.

One of my friends made an ice spell in Morrowind that could kill the entire Mages Guild in Balmora after being cast once.

The sad part is that was modless; it was perfectly possible within the game mechanics as they were released.

To be fair, its not really sad, that kind of freedom you had with the magic skills is one of the reasons Morrowind was the best TES game. Compare it to skyrim for instance where you need to mod the game for magic to even be usable :?. Oblivion was a nice middleground, but Morrowind gave you more options.

I thought it was fine as is in Skyrim...mostly because I rarely used it, instead opting for stealth and potions instead.

Nah, its just not functional. Your ability to buff was severely limited, and your damage output was broken so hard that you do not put out anywhere near enough DPS to be functional offensively anymore.

Admittedly this was pre the vampire DLC, not played it since then but dont remember hearing about the vampire DLC changing the basic game mechanics.

One positive though is that being forced to mod the game means you get access to all kinds of great things. The enhanced magic mod I used allowed you to do all kinds of things which really made you feel like you were playing a mage.
