"King's Gambit" glitch?
When attempting the diplomatic approach, I first go to the King and he tells me I've already used up my favor (? Don't know where or when, but OK)...so Crocker sends me to Hsu, and I take his offer back to the King. But when I politely make the offer, and King accepts, Pacer starts a gun-fight, killing him results in Freeside Infamy. Wiki says (in a "Behind the scenes" entry, that Pacer's attempt at a coup is part of some un-used options for the quest, but it's definately in use in my game.

Anyone know anything about this? I'd like to do the quest w/o bloodshed, but I may have to re-start it from the beginning, and go with the assassination route.

I just googled your title and found this little solution. Gives some extra ways of taking out pacer peacefully. I have always found it quite easy to do the kings gambit by just working through the game normally ... which for me involves talking to eveyone I come across. Anyway hope it helps

Thanks. Yea, actually I just reloaded the auto save again from when I entered the School, and THIS time I didn't actually try to kill Pacer myself...just ran for cover. The soldiers in the room gunned Pacer and his supporters down in a couple of seconds, and I didn't lose any karma or fame at all. So I guess the secret at that point is to NOT participate in the battle...lol.

But I think I'll do it all over again anyway...the Van Graffs are already dead, so I can't go that route, but I can still give Pacer a heart-attack, which might be funny to watch.

Not sure where I "used up my favor" from GI Blues, but it's been a long while since I did that quest, so I guess I must have asked the King about some help already.

Thanks for the vid.

It's fun just trying different solutions and often there are several ways of doing each! It is a great game for trying different ways and makes for good replayability.

I usually disable autosaves as I find autosaves often lead to crashes. But I make hard saves regularly or using the console so I have a named save

Yea, I usually have auto-save turned off as well, for the same reason. But I turn it on every once in a while, when I'm entering a building where something 'important' might be happening, and I don't want to make another hard save for w/e reason. Which is what I happened to do here. Have a hard save just before I spoke to Crocker to initiate the quest, then just use quick or auto till it's done.

Next game, I'll be sure to keep the Van Graffs alive long enough to do the set-up option...I think it'd be pretty funny to watch Pacer run to the Silver Rush and get gunned down by the gaurds...lol.

The other thing I try to do is w/e I do a hard save is I delete the quick save. so that the quick save doesn't keep some bits of info from way back and become bloated or corrupted.

Yeah the Van graffs can be handy as an extra trader even just to sell off gear. Would be great to have ways of neutralising them with out taking them out. Although I quite the battle to take them out.
