Viva New Vegas mod
If this is the wrong board, can mods move it?

Just bought a Deck. Want to play New Vegas on it. Steam site says it's "playable" but there is a mod to allow it to run smoother. Unfortunately, it's Windows based and the creators have said it will work on Linux, but they won't provide support since neither of the creators uses Linux. Can someone point me in the right direction to get it installed on Deck? TYIA for the assistance.

I'd say this is the wrong board, this is maintaining a Source server on Linux, not SteamDeck nor client software.

I'm sorry I'm not able to point you to the right forum, but hopefully the mods can.

To install a Windows-based mod for Fallout: New Vegas on your Steam Deck running Linux, follow these steps:

1. Install Proton (if not already enabled):
Proton is Steam's compatibility layer to run Windows games on Linux. Make sure Fallout: New Vegas is set to use it:
Open Steam on your Deck.
Find Fallout: New Vegas in your library.
Go to Properties > Compatibility.
Enable "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and select a Proton version.
2. Install a Mod Manager:
The most popular mod manager for Fallout: New Vegas is Vortex:
Download Vortex for Windows from Nexus Mods.
Install it on your Steam Deck using Proton. Use Steam's Add a Non-Steam Game feature:
Add the Vortex installer as a non-Steam game.
Enable Proton for it the same way as for Fallout: New Vegas.
Launch Vortex and configure it to detect Fallout: New Vegas.
3. Install the Mod:
Download the mod file for New Vegas.
Add the mod files through Vortex.
Follow the mod’s instructions to ensure proper setup. Some mods require configuration files to be manually placed in the game directory.
4. Troubleshooting with Linux Tools:
If the mod doesn’t work out of the box, you might need Wine or a Windows emulator like Lutris for additional compatibility.
Use the Protontricks tool to configure specific dependencies:
Install Protontricks via Steam Deck’s Desktop Mode.
Use it to install missing libraries or tweak Fallout: New Vegas settings.
5. Testing and Adjusting:
Return to Game Mode and launch Fallout: New Vegas with the mod installed.
If you experience performance issues, try a different Proton version or adjust mod settings in Vortex.
This process might require some trial and error, but many players have successfully run similar mods this way. Let me know if you run into specific issues!
