Ok so here is the general gist. Fallout actually started about twenty years ago when I was a teen.
Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 90's games. Then there was something else, a new game was going to be created part of the universe but was canceled and then F3 Fallout New Vegas and now Fallout 4.
So each game has it's own main star (you) representing some unique character and his individual travels and such unique to you, and of course there is a main story.
However, they are all part of the same world storyline and here it goes.
Fallout world is basically our world in the future going from 2161 I think up until so far 2288.
However when I say our world what I mean is our timeline pretty much follows the same general gist as fallout universe timeline, up until the 1950s.
So world war 2 is won by the allies, and the 1950's with it's general prosperity begins like it did in the United States of our timeline.
However this is where our timeline and fallout's timeline starts to diverge.
so essentially in our timeline 1950's passed, and we entered a cold war with Russia up until the 90's right?
In fallout Universe the cultural norms of 1950's America never went away, nor did cold war fears, but Russia falls apart, yet replaced now with China as a communist enemy.
So then the real future starts oil by 2050 begins to run out throughout the entire world.
The United States starts to get really antsy as well as the rest of the world.
A war starts out with the new European Commonwealth, against the Middle East over oil.
This is called the resource wars, it ends but nukes are used against some Middle Eastern countries, and this alarms the the United States that they could be hit next against the Chinese. They start preparing secret vaults to protect a section of the country in case of widespread nuclear attack.
U.S. also at this point created 13 districts of a sort throughout the country, which is higher than the state but lower then the federal government.
U.S. and China go to war and eventually fight over in Alaska, over oil.
This war promotes the U.S. and China to create more advanced weaponry, such as power armor to decimate troops as well as robots to help fight.
Other things are also created such as FEV (a virus meant to originally protect U.S. troops from radiation exposure due to fears China would use nukes or other biological weapons) subjects exposed to this virus though don't just get immunity from radiation but augmented strength usually at the expense of intelligence.
Anyway long long story short.
by 2077 the U.S. kicks the Chinese out of Alaska and it seems like the U.S. has won.
However very very soon after, like within the next few months a new global nuke war starts, lasting two hours, the U.S. is gone. The rest of the world ?? who knows but probably gone, in the sense that so many nukes were used that the water throughout the country at least (since all the games take place in the former United States) is radiated now, amongst some other animals.
Anyway some people were saved by the vaults, and by a few other means, but essentially the world which was is now dead.
K so now the real story takes place the first fallout game takes place 80 years after this event, a new world has started.
It starts out in a part of Californa, and a section of nevada.
K so won't go into specific details of each game, but general gist is, a few towns now exist or trading centers, (new civilzation so to speak) but really very very different than the world we know.
no real law and order, outside of a few trade agreements with peaceful traders in these towns, meaning raiders think mad max, mixed with some cities and trade.
Now when I say cities, that is a very loose term essentially most of these cities are really what you and I would think of as small villages.
Ok so more time goes on, finally due to previous characters in earlier fallout games, the NCR (a new country so to speak) begins because these little villages and towns and then more towns throughout californa etc, join together forming the NEw California Republic.
NCR. Fallout New Vegas takes place starting in 2281. At this point the New California Republic has territoral ambitions and is expanding it's country into what was Nevada.
NCR has about 700,000 people in it (good chunk for Post Nuclear America).
Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 take place on what was the East coast.
Fallout 3 takes place in Washington D.C.
Fallout 4 takes place in Boston.
Again though this world for the most part still even by Fallout 4, has no real order or systematic government throughout most of the United States, except really for the NCR now. though Fallout 4 suggests things that might lead into some sort of new country along the East coast as you near the end of F4.
This is a very adult game though. Five years old in my opinion is too young, because your kid will not understand most things, there is a-lot of reading, and again this is an adult game.
You can be a good guy in this game, but then you don't have to, you can do a-lot of things in this game, again not meant for a five year old.
1. Gore.
2. You can have sex in the game.
3. Swearing.
4. General adult themes.
That said - I don't think he'll get much out of it at 5. Couple years from now sure. But he might. Worst case scenario he'll just not like it and get bored.
