Are there any negative side effects to implants?
I never bothered with the implants before just as some kind of point of retaining my character's humanity, but Old World Blues kinda loosened me up on the whole "I don't want to be a cyborg" deal by forcing it onto me anyway.

Question is, do these have any negative effects, I'm doing my first hardcore run so I need every bit of help I can get. They sound a little too good to be true.
Got my eyes on the sub-dermal and possibly regenerative plants, if I have room left I'll get the strength one.

Not outside of roleplaying. It might just be time to let go of one's pure human status and swap out some parts for chrome. You would do well to leave your heart behind in the Big MT to help you get over your Old World Blues.

Their price is a huge downside. Unless you smuggle all the gold out then you are set for the whole playthrough and then some.

Actually I went from a few thousand caps to 40,000 just doing a blind run of Lonesome Road and didn't have to suffer a bit. Albeit, at a snails pace because I decided that everything I was carrying was too valuable to chuck so I went the whole DLC overencumbered until I reached a commisary. Good on them for actaully ensuring that an overencumbered-cant-jump player can actaully navigate the ENTIRE divide. The weapons and armor you find is strangely all valuable, and the commisaries restock their caps within minutes which outdoes even the Gun Runners vendotron.

I went and got All 3 implants for what turned into pocket change. Now the only hard part is keeping my dumbass companions alive who go down to a single swing from a random Leigon hit squad member.

You can easily have 2k caps pre-Nipton if you just play smart and sell surplus loot
4k caps is not that much especially after you go between GRA/Ranger Station/Goodsprings to sell your higher tier dungeon loot

For a permanent +1 they are dirt cheap really

Play caravan and you'll have enough for several implants in no time!
