The only thing I miss when playing NV is being a loot goblin
I love new vegas, I love running around the desert, doing quest roleplaying, listening to the radio.

But I always keep missing the whole exploring and looting stuff in new vegas 95% of the locations just have trash you will never need, like 5% have cool unique stuff but thats all 95% you don't miss anything out when not exploring.
I love in Fallout 4 that I can really use every single item for something, that makes me wanna explore and being a loot goblin more.

If I could the whole let me search here and let me search here feeling with new vegas and the whole every junk is usefull feeling it would be my fav game of all time I think

There is a plethora of unique and rare items to discover in this game, way more than probably 3 and 4 combined. 4's bullcrap scavenging everything in sight mechanic isn't my ideal way of exploring every nook and cranny, when 50 feet down the road is a location with the same exact junk. It's a cheap ass way just to increase player engagement with usless locations artificially.

"Junk is usefull" It is, youve probabbly just never done a Repair / Survival / Science build where you actually craft stuff, combined with the Hardcore option where you will take as much water and food as you can find.

Vex also made a good point, Fallout 4 works with general materials like Wood, Steel, Glass, etc which you get from scrapping random items. while FNV's crafting recipes always require specific items and theres no workaround

Fallout 3 tried this as well. Nearly every location has the same amount of items that you use to create the VAST amount (7) weapons available for crafting. How many steam gauge assemblies do you really need? There's like a thousand of those in the game. You building 1000 railway rifles?

Junk should be junk, not reasons to explore. Most locations in NV serve a purpose in either quests, the narritve, or npc interactions. For every deserted shack in NV, there's a dozen copy/pasted power stations in 3 or derilict factories in 4 that serve no purpose besides housing junk.

I view New Vegas less as a looting experience and more of character building experience. Chances are you're gonna do multiple playthroughs and characters, so If you want to create certain builds and you know the kind of gear you want for that character, you already know where to get look. I leave the looting experience to something like Hardcore Mode or crafting, where you're scrounging around for materials and supplies you need.

i disagree with everyone lol ;-)

much as people keep wanting to trash (pun intended) Fallout 4 when there is no need to keep comparing such different games - that game does a really great job of making looting every location rewarding in a general way - as well as providing the large amounts of loot required for players to go on scavenging missions for specific crafting goals etc

it also has Perks such as Scrounger that add ammo to practically every container, again adding to the rewards for looting - in a game for which that kind of looting is a central focus - with lots of crafting and lots of shooting - and so components and ammo are significant - and depending on the player's build, they may or may not not be able to scrap weapons for useful components

anyway - enough about Fallout 4 - and i know the other posters were responding to the OP's comparison to Fallout 4 - hence the apparent desire to trash it

but i disagree with the OP, as well as those who trashed Fallout 4 as a response - as well as their assertion that NV does not allow for a similar amount of obsessive mass looting

New Vegas is a looter's gold mine

especially in the early game the player is poor and Barter is low

firstly just for caps - there are many junk items that have a decent value to weight ratio and are everywhere - e.g. Cigarette Cartons and Packets of Cigarettes (20 to 1 and 10 to 1 respectively)

then there are all the alcoholic beverages that have a 10 or 20 to 1 ratio - plus Dirty Water at 10 to 1 and Purified at 20 to 1

and then the components for Weapon Repair Kits - which can be used on the more valuable or useful weapons of which you may only have one

and then weapons and ammo - with ammo being good to trade in Hardcore where it weighs and so the player will not want to lug it all round - and may be specialising in weapons - and good to hoard in normal mode, since it is weightless

and weapons routinely have 100 to 1 value to weight - dependant on condition

and weapons are used for repair - which eventually can make them worth more combined than individually - but also earlier on allows the player to save weight for a small value loss - but which allows them to keep exploring - and likely find better value stuff

and then all the other recipes that can be used in regular games - but are likely much more important ion Hardcore (a mode which i have still barely played - but do mean to)

i think i appreciated New Vegas's looting more after coming back after playing a lot of FO4 - while also being more aware of the differences

they are such different games - that just happen to have some similar features - but even those features play out differently in many areas

but still - both games are insanely good for looting

and as i have said previously - i would be hard pressed to choose between them

both great - but both such different games

and as for Fallout 3 - i prefer New Vegas having far more uses for junk - plus more weapon variety and ammo variety etc - so looting is more varied and rewarding

although i may hunt out a mod that limits max weapon repairing based on the repair skill - since while it does change the amount you can repair from each - i think i may enjoy a bit more challenge from adding that limitation - but maybe not lol - since not being able to repair stuff to 100% may make my brain itch - even now it annoys me when i can't get everything to stack - because i refuse to waste a whole valuable item for just that last 2% lol :-)

but i will do it with hats and glasses of course - for my collection of all the good ones :-)

anyway - New Vegas is a looter's paradise - and the DLC are great in the additional things they add

but FO4 has a lot of good things going on when it comes to looting - but they are very different things - with mostly different goals

very different games - so very different - like really really really different

can we please stop trying to compare them in a "this one is better" kind of fashion

pretty please

i like apples and i like oranges - but if i am in the mood for an apple - it really doesn't help me when people keep trying to tell me that apples suck and oranges are the best - or vice versa

and yes - i do realise the OP started the comparison in this thread - but i will still keep making the point when people start trashing either game with a comparison that i find unreasonable

but i will of course keep trying to do it as politely as possible ;-)

Peace :-)

Honestly the problem with FNV's crafting for me is the high requirement and poor UI

You have specific perks and stats to use if you want to be a scrapper
Repair/Survival mostly
Junk Rounds makes legit ammunition for example, inefficient but a shortcut to .50
