Fallout 1 and 2 are the closest to New Vegas in story, atmosphere, worldbuilding, and RPG depth. Though they're also really old isometric point and click games and hard to get into.
Fallout 3 is the closest to New Vegas in gameplay, being the engine and assets that New Vegas was based on. Though it also just feels like an inferior version of New Vegas in every way. Less quests, worse gunplay, worse writing. It, like all the other modern Fallout games, is also set on the opposite side of the country and barely references the 1/2/NV world. So I guess if you wanted more of New Vegas and don't mind the dip in quality.
Fallout 4 is over-hated. If you go into it expecting New Vegas you're going to be massively disappointed as it has very little in the way of deep RPG aspects or player choice. However it is excellent as an open world survival-crafting shooter with lite RPG aspects and much improved gunplay. Although less choice driven SOME other RPG aspects have been fleshed out as well like greatly enhanced companions that actually interact with the world around them and each other, or the new settlement system that lets you make towns and recruit NPC's.
Fallout 1 and 2 are actual garbage, I'm literally replaying them after trying to get into them years back and they have 100% luck based gameplay. I'm honestly surprised this IP managed to get off the ground quite frankly.
Sounds like someone can't handle a classic CRPG. I almost pity you.
Something that I love about the old games is that the feel is more “escape from LA/mad max” and less retrofuturism with 1950s cliches. NV tried to capture some of that feeling again, but fallout 2 does it best by far.
they're great game if you enjoy older crpg's
if not, probably would recommend 4 over 3
firstly 4 works better on modern systems, so it's much easier to get running
3 is about as functional as a toaster in a bathtub
you have to install like 5 different fixes to even get it to consider running
and then if you're as unlucky as i am rocks will just decide not to have collision anymore
fallout 3 is kinda a dumpsterfire to get running properly
But yeah, I can't recommend 3 at all. I don't like TTW either since it's such a contrived thing to make the Wanderer also the Courier.
I'd say Fallout 1, but it's not exactly friendly to those who started with the titles after 2.
but 1 and 2 is definitly a better recommendation than 3
it's just a poor experience on pc since no one cares to fix it over at microsoft
it also doesn't have the same kind of mod support that the later games have to fix these issues
hopefully that rumored remaster actually does come out
i do want to play fo3 again since it's been a long time
Maybe tactics too and some other fallout 1/2 mods. The rest isn't worth.
