Dont play with any mods, as per usual with any first time playthrough of a game. If you run into crashes or bugs, use the guide: https://vivanewvegas.moddinglinked.com/

I disagree with the person above me.

Tale of Two Wastleands - combines FO3 and NV into one huge game, you need all the expansions for both but its the best thing in the world.
*edit*

Tells player looking to mod NV about a mod for NV that combines another FO game thats $20 and... get clown awards....

I would use Viva New Vegas even if it's your first play through. Makes the game run so much nicer and just makes the experience that much better. If it's your first time I would recommend not doing the Viva New Vegas Extended part of the guide, as that stuff changes aspects of the original game, something you should experience in a later playthrough!

These mods are ones that gonna give you abbility to enjoy the game in a better way without changing anything. Including framerates above 60fps so you can utilize 144Hz screen or more, faster loadings and in general technical stuff, stable gameplay, less buggy movment and etc.

These mods are, if you ask me, A MUST, cause this is a older game and engine had its limitations back in the day, and now to utilize everything with modern hardware these are crucial.

Download NVSE first and just extract it and put it in your New Vegas installation folder: https://github.com/xNVSE/NVSE/releases

Mods list (order is not important, but first download NVSE) (I recommend installing them via Vortex Mod Manager, its faster and simpler for newbiews also):

Use explosives to cripple their limbs, then run away, or armor piercing ammo and kill them.

Alright buddy

Because the OP may not know the mod exists and FO3 GOTY is $20

FFS...

*edit*

And OP has Fallout as their last name so I am going to assume they like FO quite a bit, also TTW doesn't force them to play FO3, it combines both games, so if they're going to spend time modding NV and clearly enjoy FO... why not tell them about TTW?

Is that clear buddy?

the name was a joke, recently been watching the Fallout series which is great so far, fallout new vegas is one of my first experiences on the franchise, i do have Fallout 2 on my GOG library and Fallout 76, but i havent tried them yet.
thanks for the mod recommendation tho
im loving new vegas so far and i might just buy the whole franchise (when it goes on sale ofc) if every single one of these games have a similar quality.
used to hate the combat at first but once i got the hand of it it wasnt that hard

How old are you genuinely? Let me get this right.

>You recommend OP to spend 20$ on a seperate game
>You say OP doesnt have to play it

What does this have to do with literally anything at all?

Clown or not, they're still awards.

OP you're going to want to follow Viva New Vegas to get the game bug fixed and stabilized.

The VNV Extended part isn't necessary but I'd recommend anyway as it does add a lot of subtle gameplay enhancements from Fallout 4, restores some cut content, and polishes visuals a smidge.

From there you'll probably want to enhance gunplay too since it's pretty garbage in the vanilla game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKZW1OeRVlU

That vid has a good list of mods in the description for enhancing gunplay, though ignore Clean Animations / Anniversary Animations since a new animation pack just came out:

https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/86354

I would not recommend modding graphics on a first time playthrough for two reasons. First, it kind of betrays the vanilla experience and it's hard to find mods that feel vanilla faithful. Second, it's a MASSIVE time consuming pain in the ass. No one ever bothers just putting all models and textures under one pack, so you'll end up downloading literal hundreds of mods trying to cover every part of the game's visuals. And then if you try to add modern lighting and shadows and such to the game you'll have to spend ages configuring that to work properly and not lag too since the game wasn't designed for it.

That being said:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/14DiN5U-rV0dcmhFQdpYp8VTC6jz7O4arfxfjuTvxJRQ/edit

This graphics modlist is small, beginner friendly and very close to vanilla. The two texture packs at the top change the game's look significantly and you might want to be wary about using, but the rest is basically just UI / HUD enhancements and fixing some graphical oversights without full on remastering the game. Ignore the blood texture mod too, it just causes combat stutter.
