get the DLC.
Ultimate Edition is cheap , use google
all 4 story DLCs raise the level cap - but they are also out on the edges of the map - and don't intrude other than adding quests as soon as you leave Doc Mitchell's house
and the Gun Runner's Arsenal adds at least a few great things, such as proper iron sights on laser weapons - but it is good to play a run without it so that you are not overwhelmed when you do add it in - since it adds an insane number of weapons
so tl;dr is no, there is no need to wait - you can add the DLC for a future playthrough and it will simply enhance the experience
but there is plenty in the main game to entertain
