I would take note of what you feel is lacking as you play, then on your next playthrough, look on Nexus for the things you thought could be improved.
quick question, i decided to dowload an reanimation mod because the default animation are kinda bad, but it doesnt show up in game, what do i do?
Have you already installed knvse and nvse or other requirements for the mod? Im assuming you're using nexusmods so check if there is any conflicting mods as in load orders or overwrites. And you may want to look into the fallout nv 4gb patch. Oh and while im here, go download titans of the new west, thank me later
Oh and here's a tip, everytime you download a mod try launching the game, this way when your game doesn't work you can just disable the recently downloaded mods
Do be warned that some mods may break models after 30 minutes or so, through my experience nvac can break some of the npc's arms and it wouldn't be a problem if it doesn't happen in combat
TTW (Tale of Two Wastelands) is Fallout 3 and New Vegas together. Playing it now with only 107 mods active. Best of both worlds.

Edit: Not shown are the 4gb patcher, xnvse, and several others installed manually. The guide shows you how.
But I'd still recommend getting current set of fixes/patches, than not only fix bugs, but more importantly fix engine related issues. That engine was outdated even by 2010 standards.
Follow this guide, up to Base Finish which is where patching part ends.
https://vivanewvegas.moddinglinked.com/intro.html
Of course you usually need to play a game to know what you want to mod into it, but don't forgo fixes just because of some namby pamby excuse like "you need to play it the way it was intended".
Don't put the developers on a pedestal and feel like you need to deal with things like crashes and forced mouse acceleration because of some notion that it is part of the devs perfect vision or something.
How to know what bugs to fix? The important ones will also be some of the most downloaded items on any games nexus.
NV is perfectly fine to play with little changes, as long as it is actually working properly. The good news is that a lot of mods can be slotted in mid-playthrough if you change your mind later, and some can even be taken out, but use common sense.
Don't for example try to mod in a different player home if it replaces a home that you still have things stored in. In that situation you could probably (emphasis on probably, not definitely) be able to console command your way back into the OG home to retrieve your belongings but it isn't worth the trouble.
OP doesnt even have Fallout 3 so why would you recommend him to play TTW?
