I could say Arcanum is one of the best RPGs of all time, but that would be a lie because, although its theme and story are arguably better than New Vegas which is already fantastic when it comes to that, it was a mess from a game design perspective even back in the early 2000s.
This game is praised by like everyone.
+ Not understanding or appreciating RPGs because it's not like their favorite battle royale/CoD/Counter-Strike game.
+ NV fanboys hyping the game to the moon like it was the messiah of the industry that they are awaiting the second coming of.
Of course, they could just leave a negative review and move on with their lives, but that won't fuel their drama needs. They have to come and spew outlandish crap to get a rise out of people. Or they think by having players tell them how to enjoy something is going to make them enjoy something. The past couple months I have seen the most crazy of takes which is why I'm being generous and saying only have are trolls.
What is war at its core? A difference in ideology. It can be over anything, lines on maps, politics, religion, race, gender... even sport is a type of war.
Humans like conflict.
and i have heard great things about it
but apparently the steam version is very broken - so i decided to give it a miss
plus i am not sure i can go back to the BG type games again
whereas classic Fallout just has that extra tingle of its gritty theme, plus absurd humour, as well as tactical gunplay and all sorts of character skill based scenarios - that i am sure i will persevere with my latest game at least a little while longer
but New Vegas on the other hand i have no problems with on a mechanical gameplay level - i love it lol - i can shoot and loot fiends in VATS all day long - and i can plan my route and my progression so that i have the appropriate skills for various quests or conversation etc by the time i reach them
i really do have no problem with the age of the engine so long as the gameplay is smooth - which i find it to be - as it is in most games since Half Life 2 (which also birthed Steam) - regardless of whether they use the Source Engine - but it was a benchmark of where technology was in the mid 2000's, which was a big leap from the games of the late 90's and early 2000's
i can still play Morrowind for hundreds of hours (just with a mod to increase the view and add distant land) - without any change to the mechanical gameplay
i do think certain game types age worse than others
and so some of our classics should probably stay in their CD covers, lest they disappoint - or just entirely fail to work
while others just keep going through the ages
and for me NV is still one of my favourite games to play
while i have not fired up BG 1 or 2 in a long time - despite them being two of my all time favourite games (they gave me my name and my avatar after all lol)
whereas i reckon i could still enjoy the original Civilisation if i was in the mood
but Transport Tycoon Deluxe or OpenTTD i am not sure - since Factorio has all of the great signalling of the trains - plus lots of automation - and real time supply and demand of resources that actually get put to visible use in my factory
obviously the list goes on - but some games survive in our playlists and some do not
and that list will likely be different for everyone
but there may be some overlap in the games that survive and those that don't
but New Vegas seems to be one of those all time classics for me
and as much as some may despise the very notion of what i am about to say - i suspect Fallout 4 may well be one of those too - it has been 7 years for me, and a few thousand hours - Skyrim is a few more years, probably a thousand or so more hours - and still playing Morrowind and New Vegas for hundreds of hours at a time (can't calculate full Morrowind time since was originally before Steam - and i may well have played a load of New Vegas from disk as well)
whereas i tried to replay some Oblivion recently and got bored after maybe a dozen hours - i put maybe a few dozen into Fallout 3 a little while back- but that didn't make it either
whereas New Vegas just keeps on rolling
and my next challenge is to complete Honest Hearts really early so i can have the suppressed .45 really early lol :-)
happy gaming :-)
