Nitpicking the Fallout MTG cards
So as some of you may have heard, Magic: the Gathering is coming out with a Fallout themed set as part of their Universes Beyond series. Now, for the most part, I think the set's pretty alright. It's a Commander-focused set, more geared towards casual play, and a lot of the cards are pretty flavorful. In particular, the new Rad Counters are a very nice addition to the game, and many cards, such as Inventory Management and Rex, Cyber-hound, translate parts of the video games into card form very well. There's also some in-jokes as well (The Everflowing Chalice reprint depicts the Vault 13 flask).

However, I have a few nagging issues with the set. They're not major in any way, but they bother me quite a bit and I feel like sharing them. I'll be concerning myself mostly with New Vegas, since that's what I played, but I have one issue with a different game.

TL;DR: Interesting set, some parts of it don't make sense because of certain conditions.

  • Mr. House's color identity is... strange. House's card is White-Black-Red. Flavor-wise, Colors in MTG often correlate to certain concepts; In this case, White represents order, Black represents ambition, and Red represents impulse. However, what appears to be missing from House's color identity is Blue, which often represents Intelligence. I assume this is the case so he could be the alternate commander of the Caesar deck, whose identity is also WBR. However, he could have easily fit in the Dr. Madison Li deck, a White-Blue-Red deck, with some minor tweaks to his effect.
  • On the subject of Mr. House, he is the only card in the set that references dice rolling.
  • The Caesar deck contains many cards that depict the NCR or other factions/characters that oppose the legion - including Boone! I assume they did so because they both fit the "expendable little guys" theme of the deck.
  • The Legate Lanius card is a little disappointing. At first I thought he was hot garbage until I realized his ETB says "each opponent" instead of "target opponent", so in commander games he'd often come down as a 5/5 that takes 3 dorks out instead of a 3/3 that takes one dork out. What annoys me is that he's printed at uncommon for some reason. Rarity printings don't really matter for a mostly pre-constructed set, but it does make him feel a little less intimidating.
  • Benny, Joshua, and Ulysses don't have cards of their own. Benny is depicted in the art of Lethal Scheme, while Joshua and Ulysses are referenced in the flavor texts of some dual lands.
  • My one non-NV issue: The Master is in the deck that contains most of the mutants, radiation, and deadly wildlife, but as the alternate commander. The face commander is MOTHMAN

Isn't that the card game that made Aragorn black and some other weird gay stuff
that card game is and always has been fullblown AIDS.

The LotR set drew from the books, not the movies, and I'm not sure Aragorn's skin color was explicitly stated in the books. It's not like that's the only creative liberty they took, though; Goldberry was described as thin in the books, but her card depicts her as, for lack of a better term, "thicc".

Am I correct to assume that 4 and/or 76 have the most cards in this collection? If so, it's a no go for me, and I don't even play magic

I haven't counted the games of each individual card, and I'm not that familiar with 4 and 76. It probably depends on the precon deck you choose, but the decks aren't segregated by game. I've seen NV cards in the Dogmeat deck and FO3 and 4 cards in the Caesar deck.

If I had to guess, aside from mechanics and creatures that appear in multiple games, the game that gets represented the most is either NV or 4. I've seen all of the base game NV companions represented, but the NV DLCs are only really mentioned in the flavor text of some of the reprinted lands.

Most people here can't even get a grasp on caravan, you expect them to follow you on Magic?

Magic has sensible rules and is actually a fun game, though, unlike caravan.

Honestly, with one exception that comes to mind, [scryfall.com] the cards in modern magic are pretty clear once you understand the basic game mechanics.
