As for it being bad to navigate, I can't really say because I've played through it so many times it's not an issue for me, but I don't remember ever having too much of an issue with it.
Personally, I prefer either Dead Money (underrated, but I can see how it could be tedious, it's a breeze with that one perk that gives you thin red paste and blood sausage in the form of loot on killed enemies) or Old World Blues.
If you can snag a sniper rifle ( from Mc Carran Camp ) + a silencer mod you're good with the Survivalist rifle. Gotta make some caps first. It does cost a bundle for the mod. Don't forget to search for the energy pistol that paralyses on critical over there. That sniper rifle requires 75 guns skill & 6 STR. The Tommy gun equivalent in the DLC also requires 75 guns. If for some reason you can't get the rifle then Ratslayer will do if you can take it. Tough fight man. Not as effective as the former. Plus you should be able to make healing poultices when there. It will help a lot. Survival 30 if not mistaken. The main ingredient to make it can be found in abundance there. Good trade item too. Plus it regrows after a bit. Good luck.
thankfully it's quite short so you should be able to quickly get through the main story and get back to the mojave
Old World Blues is godtier
Dead Money is... interesting
Lonesome Road was pretty good
Honest Hearts was boring as ♥♥♥♥
That said: I pre-ordered NV and had finished nearly all of the base game content when the DLC was released. I was max level with end-game weapons/armor, so I had very little trouble with them. I'm also a compulsive min-maxer, so my character was OP as ♥♥♥♥.
Big MTN is boring.
Honest hearts is probably the best but still can be dull.
Sierra Madre REALLY sucks because of the collar smoke mines and everything else and the story is crap.
And the lonesome road is also boring and way to much dialogue ive never read dialogue from beginning to end i just speedrun it after grabbing the riot gear.
I cant believe im saying this but id rather play the frontier than any of the DLCs its more fun.
