How do I install mods without NMM?
I'd like a step by step instructional, if possible.

You will need Fallout Mod Manager for some, and to sort out your load order:

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/36901/?

All mods on the Nexus have a set of manual install instructions. The gist is:

Download a mod off the Nexus, it will normally be compressed, so you will need something like Winzip, WinRAR or 7Zip to extract it. Once you have extracted the mod, move it's contents into:

C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout New Vegas\Data

Unless otherwise stated in it's readme or download page.

Thank you! I used to know how to mod Skyrim, before I knew about the workshop.

FOMM can do the extracting itself which I think makes it easier, all you need to do is click package manager then click add FOmod in the package manager window and then choose the archived mod you downloaded and it will be added to FOMM for you to install. For sorting mods I recommend using BOSS and to always sort the mods every time you install a new one.

Vortex is also a nice alternative. It gives you notifications of what you should do first before installing mods, like installing nvse (it downloads and installs it directly from the application), mod deployment method, etc. It also somehow has built-in LOOT to sort the mods, so every time you download and install a mod, it sorts the load order.

Vortex is an intrusive piece of garbage software for braindead people who don't posess even the most basic ability to copy files. It's the iOS of mod managers.

Oops, did I somehow offend you?

by no means did you offend me, I just don't like people praising automated and intrustive mod managers like vortex. It's a harmful trend unfortunately.

I see. Yeah you have a point there. But, as long as other mod managers like MO2 and NMM are still being regularly maintained, it all comes down to a matter of preferences I suppose, alternatives and all that. And since OP asked for a method to install mods, I just provided an option.

I don't think he cares about it anymore since this thread was made 6 years ago. I don't have an opinion on MO2 as I haven't tried it ( and most likely never will ) as mod managers are a bad thing in general. NMM is just bottom of the pit, absolutely the worst of all. People should be encouraged to learn to install mods manually anyway

Oh yeah, now that you mention it. I legit didn't see this is a necro'd thread, my mistake.
Well, you have a right to have an opinion, but that doesn't mean mod managers are bad altogether.

Automation is one thing that comes to my mind. I also used to play modded GTA V, and there was no mod manager for that, just tools like openIV to open packages. I know it's as simple as creating mod folders, copying files to their respective folders after making a backup of the original ones. But if I am given a choice to do it conveniently, I would do that to save time.

Another thing is profile manager. I can use a tailored set of mods for my specific character (e.g mage) and use a different set for my other character (e.g. archer) so I don't have to use hundreds of plugins in a playthrough, only to risk frequent CTDs. I know I can merge the plugins, but back to my first point, it's to save time. That's just my opinion, anyway, as I understand you already have your own thoughts on this.
