It helps with a lot of the random crashes and more specific ones like infinite load screens, auto saving crashes... The list goes on. it's a great little tool.
And you do have to be patient with it at times.
For the record, I am playing via Tale of Two Wastelands, and the New Vegas side of things has so far given me a lot more trouble than when I was playing through 3.
UPDATE: Upon yet again looking through my load order, I noticed that the plugin for UPP was way out of place, being near the bottom of the list instead of being near the top, after all the TTW and YUP ones. After moving that back to its proper place (which it should have been in the first place, but things don't always stay in their set order when adding mods), I am now able to enter the saloon, leave Goodsprings, and listen to Radio New Vegas with the MusicPackRNV mod enabled (before, trying to play RNV would freeze my game, although I'm not entirely sure if that was because of the mod, because I never actually tried it after initially disabling it), so it seems like that was the problem. The lesson to be learned is: always check your load order a few times, and then a few times more.
