Stuck at Primm
I'm trying to follow the main story quest but when I get to Primm the escaped convicts are bullet sponges and my weapons hit like a wet noodle. Am I missing something? I looted all the Powder Gangers after helping Ringo and went straight to Primm after to follow the main quest.

Yeah you need some better skills and weaponry than that if you think you can take on a fortified base full of enemies with explosives by yourself.

Yeah think I'll backtrack and do some exploring

have you gone back to Goodsprings Source? there's an unmarked mini-quest that has a 10mm pistol that packs a decent punch for the early game. Regardless of whether you use it or not, try stealth out for a bit. Convicts aren't the most observant and the bonus damage from sneak attack crits definately smooth out the early game even if you aren't planning on relying on it long term.

Strange. Joe Cobb should have .357 Magnum at pretty decent condition (with it you should 2-tap any convict aside some in the Hotel). While one of his mooks should have single shogun which oneshot convicts.
also, if you have dynamite on you, use that for the hotel.

Also explore the stuff right around Goodsprings, the cave and the big memorial usually have good early loot. Plus you can murder coyotes for exp and profit~

There are several things to keep in consideration here. Okay so first of all, proper S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats will obviously help. It is also quite important to keep your armor and weapons in good condition. The Varmint Rifle can be a decent weapon in early game aslong as it is in perfect condition (or close).
Furthermore, repairing and reqruiting ED-E is also a great idea in the beginning. Especially if you are inexperienced and could use some backup.

I managed to clear that part with 9 gun skill and 45 energy and explosive skill(s). Of course my strength and luck are both at 10, and I was wearing armor.

The Service rifle is a far better early weapon, just loot it from a NCR trooper when they don't notice or kill then take their gear.

Or just get one for killing some ants for Ranger Jackson. Like literally following the main quest should get you one in under an hour for a new player, 15 minutes for an experienced one.
My recommendation is to try your best to just wing it. It makes the game more fun and gives more replay value. so yea, just explore and check all the nooks and crannies and you'll be able to put something together.
