melee build tips?
ive never done a melee build before, and im considering either using stuff like swords or bats etc. or going with unarmed weapons. ive heard that unarmed build benefit from leveling both melee weapons skill as well as unarmed skill, but does the same hold true for "traditional" melee weapons? any good perks to take? good weapons to recomend?

OK buddy here's my tips and tricks guide. Keep in mind I'm using the Viva New Vegas mod guide for my build which makes melee only builds so much more versatile and easier.

First of all are stats

7 strength (+2, -1)
4 Perception (+2, -1)
8 Endurance (+2, -1)
2 Charisma (+2, -1)
7 Intelligence
5 Agility (+2, -1)
7 Luck

Early Bird Perk
Wild Wasteland Perk

Melee weapons are easier than fisticuffs but I will list the best melee weapons in ranking order that I've found.

1. Photonic Inversal Axe
2. Knock-Knock
3. Katana/ Gehenna
4. Nephis 9 Iron
5. Old glory, nuka breaker etc
6. Chances knife
5. Anything else

Weapons to avoid

1. Chainsaw
2. Ripper
3. Thermic Lance
4. Super Sledge

Fisticuffs weapons

1. Pushy
2. Two Step Goodbye
3. Fist of Rawr/Embrace the Mantis
4. Super heated Saturnite
5. Love and Hate.

Places you need to get to ASAP

Followers medical clinic, you should be able to handle all 8 cyborgnetic implants.

BIG MT for the Proton Axe
Happy Trails for unique melee

Fiend territory is good because you can get love and hate along with nephis 9 iron (theyre so good)

Why avoid the listed weapons? Simple reason zero knock back. As a melee only build you rely heavily on knocking an enemy on its ass and chewing its limbs apart. So far I've successfully killed the legendary Cazador, Took on several deathclaws single handedly including patriarchs and giant Scorpions etc.

The tactic is to go heavy on the first swing, then chop them when they're done. Don't over use VATs as it'll get you stuck in an animation and you won't be able to dodge against mobs.

Chop chop lasted me from level 20 to level 46 when I replaced it with the proton inversal Axe. You literally don't need to carry any other weapons.

Time your swings right and you can sell every laser gun, mini nuke and minigun you come across.

For build: Strength 10, and level in melee and unarmed too just to get some perks that require both skills to be high.

For weapon: Just get highest dam / dps weapon you can find.

you are going to be eating more damage closing the distance, so good armor and Endurance are high on my list as well. many bladed weapons have high crit multipliers, so investing in luck and crit boosts pays dividends when using them. Alternatively, you could take the Heavy Handed trait, ignore crits, and just smash things with the biggest numbers you can find.

Also good consumables are

Cook cook's stew
Brahmin steak
Battle Brew
Large Wasteland Tequila
Sierra Madre Martini
Ant Nectar
Blood shield (cazadors)
Buffout
Healing Poultice
Rushing Water
And most importantly

Weapon Binding Ritual xxxxx

Lastly worth covering is armor, Riot Gear Armor all the way, power armor will slow your character down meaning you can't really run up to people (could somebody source that actually, idk if it has an impact?)

Poisons.. aren't really worth it. They're an interesting addition but unless you're planning on taking a pack of Yao Gaoi at level 6 I don't see much point to them.

Pay attention to the following skills

Sneaking
Melee weapons
Unarmed
Survival

You'll need all of these high to make the needed chems and perks that boosts melee damage. Make sure to read carefully and pick ones that boost swing speed, damage or has unique fighting abilities.

Avoid any perks that boosts your gun damage, you don't need them. And stay clear of AP boosting perks too

why would you need 7 int
gruetoo May 6, 2022 @ 2:02pm
more int = more skill points

OP, I've done a melee build before, and I fully recommend that you go with BOTH unarmed and melee weapons; it's a really viable build, provided that you focus on speed. Forget the heaver melee weapons; you want fast weapons, like Spiked Knuckles, the Broad Machete, and the Katana. As long as it's fast, you can rush up to an enemy, tear into them, and watch them drop before anyone can react. Only enemies that gave me pause were Deathclaws and those robo-scorpions from OWB, and that's only because of the limitations I placed on myself for my melee build. It was themed, so I stayed away from stuff that wasn't compatible with the theme.
