Legionnaire Assassins
So I'm playing game on hardest difficulty somewhat blind-ish (I played a bit before on a previous computer but it had some crashes I couldn't fix so had to give up pretty early on) and these guys seem way too overpowered compared to every other enemy I've ever met. Not to mention they kind of tend to show up in inconvenient situations. I don't understand why they seem to have such ridiculous amounts of health and do so much damage, most of the time they seem to go through my HP in 3-4 seconds and if I am not mistaken each group seems to be getting tougher. They also have killed at least one NPC that was a quest-giver by showing up when I happened to be near them, seems like they just melt through everything like a hot knife through butter. The only ways I have been able to deal with them is either by spamming 40mm grenades or sometimes sniping them from somewhat far if they happen to be clunky at getting around some terrain and I happen to see them come by, but they take huge amounts of ammo to kill even so because of their ridiculous armor\health. So is it just me or are these guys just completely broken? Maybe I'm supposed to just run from them...I finally went to New Vegas area just to get away after killing 2/4 of the last group and then running for my life, but even though I have gained quite a few levels since then, now that I've ventured out further from New Vegas again I met another group right away and got my ass kicked even more than before it seems...I don't think I am doing so badly at the game since I have only died maybe ~10 times on my way to reaching level 15-16 and while other enemies have been challenging at times, with being careful everything else has seemed quite reasonable compared to the ridiculous tankiness of these guys. Tips \ thoughts? (and no spoilers please)

they are strong because they are end game enemies. At lvl 15, youre not supposed to be fighting them yet, what did you do to get bad Legion karma? Youre best off getting the platinum chip back, after that you will be forgiven of all your bad deeds done to the Legion and NCR. minor spoiler but its necesary here.

I rescued hostages that were taken from the Nipton town that is attacked as you pass through early on doing the main quest. A small side quest is given to rescue the hostages and the location is nearby east of Nipton and on the way north to Vegas, so seems kind of brutally punishing to get stuck with these guys for the rest of the game given that doing that side quest seems very natural and the enemies encountered while rescuing the hostages are easy lower level legionnaires, but I guess it's keeping things interesting...and I've been fighting them since level 5...lol

you shouldnt pick fights with any of the main factions early on untill youve decided whether or not you want to help them. Just get the platinum chip and theyll stop coming after u

The game warns you not to make NCR or the legion mad. Since you're already in Freeside, buy some powerful weapons from the gun runners and kill them, or run away. They're not really all that dangerous until level 30~.

I don't know what you consider to be spoilers so read this at your own risk. No real spoilers imo, but some game mechanic things.

They don't spawn randomly, there are certain spawn points. You'll learn where pretty quickly. The encounter always start with their leader running up to you and telling you that Caesar has decided you must die. If you kill the leader before he can deliver his message the rest of the group will become confused and will only attack if they can see you. This gives you a great opportunity to take them out from a distance. The upside of these encounters is that they provide a ton of valuables that you can sell, almost to a point where it feels like cheating.

You can get your infamy reset one time only by the Legion after you deal with Benny.

As for rescuing the hostages at the legion camp, if you mean the raid camp location given when you go to Nipton you can kill those two legion guards covertly for no Karma loss then release the Powder Gangers and no one will ever be the wiser.

I angered these guys too early on and it was tough for a while. Once I leveled up a bit they became a lot easier (having at least one companion around really helps). Started to look forward to the loot! Now that my Legion infamy has been reset I kind of miss these guys.

The solution is to know when they’ll attack, and to be prepared for it:

When: The assassins will attack you every once every 24 in game hours in open areas in the wasteland, keep track of how much time is passing as it will keep them from catching you unprepared

Preparation: Turbo, 2 companions, Jury rigging, and a super sledge or thermic lance. You can get chems from the bartender in the lower brimstone at the Gomorrah) as well as a recipe for it from the first quest at the red rock canyon drug lab, and you can get cazador glands from the wind farm to the east of Old lady gibbons place near Novac. The assassins will always have one person with a super sledge or thermic lance so you can get that from looting them.

Take out the ones with the brush gun and 12.7 submachine gun first as those two are the ones dealing the most damage (if lower level assassins then it will be the ones with a hunting rifle and a 9mm or 10mm sub instead). Repair those weapons with cheap stuff using jury rigging and sell them for wild prices. Use the caps to buy better gear

They can be challenging at low-mid level, but over time they can go from a threat to basically free loot. Can get like 5k-10k each time they attack from repairing/selling their stuff

There's also a spawn point for the assassins just ENE of Gibson's place. It's on the road just beyond the two molerats. Often a caravan spawns at the same spot which means more loot. :)

NCR and Legion assassins are just cash that runs to you. They deal pathetic amount of damage because they die too fast.

Eh so what infamy level do I have to have for these guys to show up? I'm hated after taking out their slave camp. An NCR patrol walked right in and I thought I would help myself since I had the quest anyway :dogandbone:

On the bright side, you can loot them for some good guns and armor pieces for repairing. Legion and NCR armors may make some factions aggro you, but they're still good with Jury Rigging.

I always wondered why whenever I go to get my gear repaired, I always happen to find them there...
